Ross Brawn, the managing director of Formula 1, says that the sport's new technical rules should improve the quality of the racing.

Brawn noted that although the new cars may not be perfect when trailing, they will still be far better than the old ones.

"We may see we don't quite hit a bull's eye in terms of following (directly behind another car) but we will still be so massively ahead of where we were because the old cars were dreadful (for racing)," Brawn said.

The new technical regulations, which were introduced for the first time in 40 years, aim to improve the way cars behave during overtaking. The aerodynamic design is also a crucial factor in determining F1 car speed. In the past, it was known to lose up to half its downforce when following closely to overtake.

Calculations performed by F1 revealed that, under the new rules, a car following another vehicle will retain 85 percent of its downforce.

The other key component of the new regulations is that they prevent teams from gaining a massive advantage over the other vehicles during a race.

Brawn noted that the regulations made the sport more competitive while still leaving it to its current structure.

"Every decision we have made has been towards not dumbing down the sport but making it more achievable to more of the teams and to get a closer competition going on while still leaving it a meritocracy," the managing director said.

Nothing much will change on track
Although Brawn expected the new regulations to change the order of the races, he did not expect it to happen too much. "I honestly don't think the regs will change the general order of things dramatically," said the former motorsport engineer.

Although the cars will need to adjust to the new regulations, the person behind the wheel is the main factor in the F1 race. Brawn is expecting several great races this season, with Ferrari and Mercedes having several strong drivers.

"We're blessed with a number of great drivers - (McLaren's) Lando Norris, the Ferrari drivers (Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz), George Russell in the Mercedes. Any number of combination of drivers could give us a great season," said the Lancashire-native engineer.

The new regulations also prevent the use of the front wing to generate downforce. Instead, it's up to the car's underfloor to generate the additional downforce. F1 is also returning to the concept of venturi tunnels, designed to create additional downforce using the cars' understructure.

The new cars will also have a flat rear end, which will help generate more downforce. They'll also have a tougher aerodynamic platform.
