Jakarta ranked #3 (tied with Taipei) on Time Out's 2026 list of the world's best street food cities  four points behind the winner, Ho Chi Minh City. 

Four percentage points. That's the entire gap between Jakarta and the city that just got crowned the best street food destination on Earth.

Jakarta street food just earned global bragging rights, tying with Taipei for third place on Time Out's 2026 ranking of the world's best cities for street food. The list, based on a survey of roughly 24,000 city residents worldwide, put Ho Chi Minh City in first place with a 63% approval rating, Kuala Lumpur second at 62%, and Jakarta tied with Taipei at 59%. Bangkok  often assumed to be Southeast Asia's street food capital  landed at ninth, and Mumbai rounded out the top ten.

What Is the Time Out Street Food Rangking, Exactly?

Time Out's street food category is pulled from a larger "World's Best Food Cities 2026" survey, where locals rated their own city's food scene  cost, quality, and specific categories like cafés and fine dining, with street food broken out separately. It's not a panel of critics parachuting in for a weekend; it's people who eat this food on a Tuesday commute. That's part of why the result stings a little for Jakarta: this isn't tourist marketing copy, it's a hometown scorecard.

In Ho Chi Minh City, the win comes from a food culture built around motion  vendors on low plastic stools, carts wedged into every corner of District 1, banh mi assembled in under a minute. Kuala Lumpur's case rests on Jalan Alor, where an entire street turns into an open-air canteen after dark, thick with the smell of charcoal satay and the smoky "wok hei" of stir-fried char kway teow.

Why Did Jakarta Place Third Instead of First?

Jakarta's strength is in its warungs  the roadside stalls that serve nasi goreng loaded with shredded chicken and fried shallots, and gado-gado drenched in thick peanut sauce. The 59% score puts Jakarta ahead of food-forward cities like Bangkok (56%) and Mumbai (55%), but the ranking suggests Jakarta's street food scene, while beloved locally, hasn't built the same globally recognized signature dish or district that Ho Chi Minh City or Kuala Lumpur have.The surprising twist buried in the data: eight of the top ten cities on the entire list are Asian. Bangkok  a city practically synonymous with street food in Western travel media  finished behind Jakarta.

Where Does This Leave Jakarta's Food Scene?

Third place, tied, four points off the top  respectable, but a signal that Jakarta's street food culture is under-marketed relative to how good it actually is. For a city this size, with this much culinary depth, third place reads less like a ceiling and more like an opening.
