A quarterfinal date with Iran in Tianjin could send Indonesia's Garuda Pertiwi into uncharted territory: their first-ever AVC semifinal. 

Three matches. Two wins. One heartbreak against Thailand. That's all it took for Indonesia's national women's volleyball team to climb four spots in the world rankings this week  and they're still playing.

What is Indonesia's current women's volleyball world rangking?

As of the FIVB ranking update on August 26, 2026, Indonesia's women's volleyball team  nicknamed Garuda Pertiwi or the Timnas Voli Putri  sits at 48th in the world, up four places, with a rating of 81.73 points. The jump came during the AVC Women's Continental Championship 2026, held in Tianjin, China, where Indonesia is competing against the region's strongest teams for a shot at the semifinals.

The team, coached by Marcos Sugiyama, opened the tournament with a clean 3–0 win over Kazakhstan (25-22, 25-22, 25-23) on August 22, which added 12.55 points to their ranking. Two days later, they lost 0–3 to a dominant Thailand side, costing them 4.13 points. But on August 26, Indonesia bounced back hard, beating Australia 3–0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-21) for another 7.90 points  enough to finish as Pool B runner-up and lock in a quarterfinal spot.

How does the ranking points system actually work?

Every match at a sanctioned tournament like this one shifts a team's ranking points based on the result, the score margin, and the strength of the opponent. A clean sweep against a lower-ranked team, like Indonesia's win over Kazakhstan, earns more points than a narrow win. Losses subtract points, but the size of the loss matters too Indonesia's 0–3 defeat to Thailand cost less than four points, a relatively soft landing given Thailand's higher ranking.

Who is Indonesia playing next, and why does it matter?

Indonesia now faces Iran, coached by Alireza Tolookian, in the quarterfinal at the Tianjin Olympic Center Gymnasium on Friday, August 28, at 2:00 PM WIB. Iran advanced from Pool A after wins over Taiwan (3-1) and Iraq (3-0). The two teams aren't strangers  Indonesia has beaten Iran twice in the past two years at the AVC Cup, losing only once.

A win would be historic. Since Indonesia's debut in this competition back in 1979  where they placed 5th, their best-ever finish  the team has never reached the semifinals across 12 appearances. Team manager Luciana Taroreh didn't undersell the challenge ahead:

"Iran have real quality and experience  we're preparing as hard as we can."

The squad leans on a core group including Medi Yoku, Chelsea Berliana, Miradanti Namira, Arneta Putri, Arsela Nuari Purnama, and Ersandrina Devega. If Indonesia wins the whole tournament, they punch a ticket to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. A top-three finish qualifies them for the 2027 FIVB World Cup.

For a team that spent decades outside Asia's top five, a rising world ranking and a shot at the semifinals isn't just a good week  it's a signal that Indonesian volleyball is finally closing the gap.
