The world's biggest footwear trade fair is back on September 13–15, 2026  and its trend report says the quiet, minimalist shoe era is officially over.

For almost a decade, shoe shelves everywhere quietly agreed to be boring. Muted tones, clean lines, nothing that asked for attention. That era just got its expiration date. MICAM Milano's newest trend report says the next big shoe season is loud, textured, and unapologetically decorative  and it's not just a Milan problem. It's relevant to Indonesia, the world's third-largest footwear exporter.

At a glance:

  • MICAM Milano's 102nd edition runs September 13–15, 2026, in Milan
  • Indonesia's 2025 footwear exports hit roughly USD 7.98 billion, up 9.54% from 2024
  • Export volume: around 601 million pairs of shoes in 2025 alone
  • The Indonesia-EU trade deal (IEU-CEPA) has cut EU tariffs of 9–15% on Indonesian shoes since September 23, 2025

What is MICAM Milano, and why does it matter?

MICAM Milano is the world's largest international footwear trade fair, held twice a year in Milan, Italy. It brings together shoe brands, buyers, and industry professionals from across the globe. This year's edition, running September 13–15, 2026, comes with a new tool: the Trend BUYER'S Guide, produced with trend research firm Livetrend. Built on trend analysis, predictive analytics, and AI, the guide maps where footwear fashion is heading for Spring/Summer 2027  helping brands and retailers plan their next collections with more precision, not guesswork.

What are the Spring/Summer 2027 shoe trends?

The short version: color and texture are back. After years of minimalism dominating shelves, the guide points to a shift toward bolder colors, richer materials, and more visible decorative detail. MICAM calls it "more mature maximalism"  expressive, but still built around comfort and authenticity rather than excess for its own sake.

The forecast groups this shift into four macro trends: Mare Noir, Urban Beach, Tribal Relics, and Summer Residence, each tied to a different lifestyle and mindset. On the shelf, expect to see the Mary Jane reinterpreted, deconstructed loafers, and urban-style flip-flops that blend classic design codes with a more elegant, relaxed feel.

Read between the lines of the trend report and the message is simple: after years of "quiet luxury," shoes are being asked to say something again.

Why does this matter for Indonesia's footwear industry?

Indonesia isn't a bystander here. According to the Indonesian Footwear Association (Aprisindo), national footwear exports reached about USD 7.98 billion in 2025, a 9.54% increase from 2024, with roughly 601 million pairs shipped. Exports have jumped more than 65% cumulatively since 2020.

Part of that momentum comes from the IEU-CEPA trade agreement, active since September 23, 2025, which removed EU tariffs of 9–15% on Indonesian footwear. That puts Indonesian brands on more even tariff footing with competitors like Vietnam, opening the door to markets beyond the US, which has long been the top export destination.

Events like MICAM Milano are one of the practical entry points for that expansion. Indonesian label Pijak Bumi previously showed at MICAM through its Emerging Designer program in 2020. This September, Mario Minardi joins the exhibitor list. With Aprisindo targeting USD 10 billion in exports by 2028–2029, a bigger presence at international trend and trade platforms like MICAM could help more Indonesian brands reach premium global shelves.
