The years 2020 and 2021 were recorded as bad years for the airline business and its services. The pandemic has changed everyone's travel habits, and coupled with strict health protocols; the desire to travel has to be postponed.

The airline service rating agency Skytrax conducted a 23-month survey starting from September 2019 to July 2021. This survey also looks at the top 20 global airlines' services and sees each airline's movement compared to the 2019 survey results.

From the survey results, Qatar Airways was named Airline of The Year 2021, followed by Singapore Airlines in second place and ANA All Nippon Airways in third. All three outperformed the 350 airlines involved in the survey.

Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive Akbar Al Baker said, "This award was made possible thanks to the hard work of the Qatar Airways team and the passengers who showed their loyalty and appreciation for the choice of airlines amid uncertain and challenging conditions. The quality of service that has never been lowered even during a pandemic provides certainty for travellers to choose to fly to their homes."

"Being named the 'World's Best Airline' for an unprecedented sixth time is an enormous achievement, and provides our passengers with even greater confidence that they can travel with Qatar Airways as the first global airline to achieve the Skytrax COVID-19 Airline Safety Rating, while transiting through Hamad International Airport, the Skytrax'  World's Best Airport' for 2021," said Al Baker.

In addition to obtaining the above titles, Qatar Airways also received the World Best Business Class, World Best Business Class Seat and the Best Airline in the Middle East.

In second place, Singapore Airlines has also crowned the World's Best Cabin Crew and was awarded the World's Best First Class and the Best Airline in Asia and the World's Best First Class Seat.

ANA All Nippon Airways, which maintained its third world ranking, received another award as the World's Best Airport. This Japanese airline also received the World's Cleanest Airline award, which is quite interesting in the current global pandemic situation.

Saudi Arabian Airlines won the World's Most Improved Airline award. The airline outperformed Rwandair in second place and JetSmart in third. These awards are critical to a globally changing airline service and make improvements in several award categories.

Edward Plaisted from Skytrax said the award for Qatar Airways is the highest recognition, especially for the sixth time in a row.

"We congratulate Qatar Airways for this unique success. Voted by customers, the focus of our annual survey is for travelers to make their own, personal choices as to which airline they consider to be best, and it is clear that Qatar Airways has maintained its high standards of innovation and service standards, both in more normal times and through the current global pandemic," Plaisted said.

On the list of the ten best airlines, Emirates is ranked fourth, fifth is Japan Airlines, and sixth is Cathay Pacific Airways. In seventh place is EVA AIR, eighth is Qantas Airways, ninth is Hainan Airline, and the tenth is Air France.

The better position is in the category of the World's Best Cabin Staff 2021. Garuda Indonesia is in fourth place, below Singapore Airline in the first position, ANA All Nippon Airways in second position and Thai Airways in the third position. It seems that Asian airlines dominate the best service from cabin staff.

In the 2021 World's Best First Class Airlines category, Garuda Indonesia is in 17th position. In the 2021 World's Best Business Class Airlines category, Garuda Indonesia is in 20th position.

In the category of World's Best Economy Class Airline 2021, Garuda Indonesia is ranked 10th. Garuda Indonesia's success in the Skytrax 2021 event is considered quite good amid flight service conditions during the pandemic.

In addition, Garuda Indonesia also received a special award related to the Covid-19 pandemic situation, namely The 2021 COVID-19 Airline Excellence Awards. This is related to the health protocols applied to passengers, from booking tickets to being in the plane cabin.

The COVID-19 standards are assessed in several areas including; information and signage, distance marking and control, consistent use of face masks between staff and passengers, visibility and frequency of hand sanitisers, standards and availability of cleaning products, customized services at airports and on board flights, and criteria and frequency during the end-to-trip experience.

Garuda Indonesia shared this award with several other airlines such as AirAsia, Air France, American Airlines, Citilink, and Vietnam Airlines.

The World Airline Awards began in 1999 when Skytrax launched its first global, annual airline customer satisfaction survey. They are referred to as the Oscars of the aviation industry.

The awards survey process is not restricted to member airlines or a pre-selected choice of airline, and any airline in the world can be nominated.
