INDONESIA AND SOUTH KOREA COLLABORATE ON ELECTRIC CARS WITH BATIK MOTIFS TO MARK 50 YEARS OF BILATERAL RELATIONS
Fusion of Innovation and Tradition: Indonesia and South Korea's Joint Venture Marks 50 Years of Bilateral Relations
In a significant move to commemorate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Indonesia and South Korea, both countries have announced plans to collaborate on the production of electric cars adorned with traditional Indonesian batik motifs. The announcement was made by the Indonesian Embassy in Seoul, highlighting the importance of promoting batik, recognized as UNESCO cultural heritage.
Zelda Wulan Kartika, Deputy Head of Indonesian Embassy Representatives in Seoul, emphasized the cultural significance of batik, stating, "Not only about electric cars, but batik is also important because it includes UNESCO cultural heritage and needs to be promoted." The collaboration involves an Indonesian automotive company partnering with a South Korean counterpart, with the joint venture set to unveil its electric car with a Solo batik motif later this year at an automotive event in Indonesia.
While specific details about the electric car remain undisclosed, the incorporation of Solo batik motifs aims to showcase the rich cultural heritage of Indonesia. The move aligns with the Indonesian government's broader initiative to encourage the use of electric cars as part of the country's energy transition strategy.
The diplomatic relations between Indonesia and South Korea were established in 1973, and the 50th-anniversary celebrations have seen a series of events organized by the Indonesian Embassy in Seoul throughout 2023. These events included business forums focusing on strategic themes such as cooperation in the financial sector, electric vehicles, health, and investments in renewable energy.
In April, the Indonesian Embassy collaborated with Busan University of Foreign Studies to host the Indonesian Festival in Busan, further strengthening cultural ties. Future plans include organizing an event about Indonesia in Ansan City, reflecting the commitment to enhancing people-to-people connections.
In addition to the diplomatic festivities, the Indonesian Embassy is actively promoting the development of the Indonesia Center across various cities in South Korea. Last year, an Indonesia Center was established at the Busan University of Foreign Studies, serving as a hub for studying Indonesian culture and fostering cultural exchanges between the two nations.
The collaboration on electric cars with batik motifs stands as a testament to the strong and enduring partnership between Indonesia and South Korea, merging innovation and tradition to celebrate five decades of diplomatic ties.
