1,700 performers, 387 dancers, one story about the women who hold Indonesia together

A woman weeps on stage while a song about her mother plays. She isn't an actress reading lines  she's a character built from a folk tale everyone in the room grew up hearing. Around her, 6,000 people go quiet. That's the moment "Sio Mama" hits during scene 15 of Pagelaran Sabang Merauke 2026, and it's the moment that made people cry into their popcorn.

Pagelaran Sabang Merauke 2026  "Hikayat Srikandi Nusantara" is the seventh edition of Indonesia's annual colossal culture show, staged 21–23 August 2026 at Indonesia Arena, Gelora Bung Karno, Jakarta. Produced by iForte and BCA, it puts about 1,700 performers and crew on one stage to tell the stories of six legendary.

Indonesian women  Srikandi, Mahadewi, Calonarang, Mande Rubayah, Dayang Sumbi, and Limbuk  through dance, orchestral music, and theater.

What Is Pagelaran Sabang Merauke 2026 About ?

Unlike past editions, which stacked separate regional performances back to back, "Hikayat Srikandi Nusantara" runs as one continuous story. Srikandi  played by singer Raisa Andriana  travels with a servant girl named Limbuk and a small crew of guides, Petruk, Bagong, Zie, and Vanilla, through different corners of Indonesian folklore.

Along the way they meet Mahadewi, reprised by Yura Yunita from last year's run, a figure born from divine anger and now a symbol of a mother's love paired with a soldier's courage. They meet Calonarang, played by Pradnya Larasati, a misunderstood woman whose rage is really resistance against injustice. They meet Mande Rubayah, played by Mirabeth Sonia, the grieving mother of Malin Kundang. And they meet Dayang Sumbi, played by Christine Tambunan, cursed and blessed with eternal youth.

What Happens During the Show?
The production leans hard into specific regional detail rather than generic spectacle. In scene 6, Mande Rubayah's grief unfolds to the West Sumatran tune "Kambanglah Bungo." In scene 15, singer Alsant Nababan performs the Maluku ballad "Sio Mama"  a stripped-down moment with just a mother and her small child on stage, a sharp contrast to the earlier full-ensemble number "Hai Rame-Rame." Backing the singers: 119 choir members, a 60-piece orchestra conducted by Avip Priatna, and musicians playing 50 traditional instruments, composed by Elwin Hendrijanto.

The visual side is just as detailed  over 1,500 costumes built by 16 designers, with some dancers working through four to six choreographers depending on the regional style they're performing.

Executive producer Silvi Liswanda at the show's kickoff press conference in May 2026  the goal, in her words, was to make young Indonesians know their own culture, then want to know more.

Why This Edition Is Different
Last year's Sabang Merauke show involved around 1,500 artists and drew a combined 28,000 spectators across its run. This year's number climbed to 1,700 performers  a sign the annual show keeps scaling up rather than settling into a routine format, and a shift toward one connected narrative instead of a variety-show structure.

Frequently Asked Questions

It's the seventh edition of an annual Indonesian colossal culture performance, produced by iForte and BCA, combining dance, orchestral music, and theater into one show. The 2026 theme, "Hikayat Srikandi Nusantara," centers on legendary Indonesian women from regional folklore, told as a single continuous story rather than separate acts.
Singer Raisa Andriana plays Srikandi, the character who guides the audience through the other women's stories. Yura Yunita returns as Mahadewi, a role she also played in the previous edition.
This year involved roughly 1,700 performers and crew, up from about 1,500 last year, and restructured the performance as one connected story about six women Srikandi, Mahadewi, Calonarang, Mande Rubayah, and Dayang Sumbi instead of separate regional segments.
