THE COURAGE TO START ANEW: HOW LEARNING LATER IN LIFE TRANSFORMS PERSPECTIVES
Breaking Barriers: Stories of Resilience, Rediscovery, and Lifelong Learning
Life often throws us into roles and responsibilities that make learning new skills seem like a luxury reserved for the young. Yet, stories abound of people rediscovering their potential later in life, proving it’s never too late to embrace change and growth. Whether it’s cycling, swimming, cooking, reading, or even mastering an instrument, these individuals demonstrate how courage, determination, and a little encouragement can lead to transformative journeys.
Pedaling Toward Freedom
For Naida Jabar, a 47-year-old mother from Yorkshire, learning to cycle wasn’t just about picking up a skill but reclaiming a sense of freedom and connection. Having grown up in a family that avoided bikes after her brother’s tricycle accident, Naida never learned to ride as a child. Decades later, inspired by her children, she joined a community cycling course called "sofa to saddle."
The fear of falling and her insecurities about learning at her age and size didn’t deter her. “The thought of being able to ride alongside my children kept me going,” Naida recalls. Today, not only has she mastered cycling, but she also empowers others as a certified Bikeability instructor, leading rides for women needing confidence to get on the road.
Conquering Water, Conquering Fear
Simba Kachere’s childhood in Zimbabwe left him with little opportunity to learn swimming, as access to pools was segregated under colonial rule. By the time he moved to the UK, the prospect of learning seemed daunting. However, a combination of gentle encouragement from his partner and the incentive of a Christmas holiday challenge led Simba, at 53, to secretly take lessons.
Learning was initially intimidating, but Simba’s determination to impress his friends paid off. By the time Christmas arrived, he was not only swimming but also winning friendly races. For Simba, swimming became more than a skill—it represented breaking barriers he thought were insurmountable.
Cooking as a Path to Connection
Andy Scott, 75, never had to cook during his marriage, as his late wife handled the kitchen. But her passing left him grappling with loneliness and reliance on ready-made meals. When his daughter urged him to attend a cooking class, Andy hesitated, feeling both fear and a lack of purpose in cooking for one.
Yet, the social aspect of the class, organized by Age UK Barnet, transformed his perspective. “It’s a very lonely life when your better half dies,” Andy reflects. Cooking with others not only taught him practical skills but also rekindled a sense of community. Now, preparing meals for his family brings him pride and a connection he deeply cherishes.
Reading for the First Time at 33
Stephie Bradshaw, now 36, spent most of her life hiding her inability to read due to undiagnosed dyslexia. Watching a program about adult literacy gave her the push to seek help. Guided by a supportive coach, Stephie slowly unlocked a world she had long been excluded from.
“For the first time, I understood why people read books,” she says, recalling the joy of finishing her first novel. Reading aloud to her daughter each night fulfills a lifelong dream and symbolizes her transformation from someone pretending to someone fully capable and confident.
Music as a Bridge to the Past
For Alan Ackroyd, a cancer survivor from Cambridge, retirement became the opportunity to chase a long-held dream. After surviving life-threatening surgery, Alan resolved to make every day count. At 60, he began teaching himself to play the concertina, a traditional folk instrument, through books and online tutorials.
Today, Alan feels a profound connection to history through the music he brings to life. “The dots I read on a page become sounds people heard 200 years ago,” he marvels. His journey exemplifies how even later stages of life can be rich with creativity and fulfillment.
