  •  4.4 / 5: Its score, versus 4.7 for first-place Vori-vori and 4.5 for Beyran çorbası
  •  32,981: Ratings TasteAtlas counted as legitimate for its top 100 soups list (data up to August 15, 2026)
  •  4th: Its position on TasteAtlas’s current top 100 list, per some reports

A bowl of Soto Betawi arrives with a pale-gold broth, half a lime, and a cracker the size of your palm resting on the rim. Then you taste it, and the coconut milk hits first, followed by a slow, warm spice.

That bowl just earned a global ranking. Soto Betawi is a beef soup from Jakarta’s Betawi community, and in September 2026 the food platform TasteAtlas placed it third among the world’s 50 best traditional soups. It scored 4.4 out of 5. Paraguay’s

Vori-vori took first place with 4.7, and Türkiye’s Beyran çorbası came second with 4.5.

What Is Soto Betawi?

Soto Betawi is a soup of beef chunks and offal, simmered slowly in coconut-milk broth. According to TasteAtlas, the broth is usually flavored with lemongrass, turmeric, galangal, lime leaves and coriander.

The name points to the Betawi people, and the dish is believed to have started in Jakarta. Today it is sold at street stalls, restaurants and hawker-style eateries across the city. It is traditionally eaten with steamed rice and pickled acar on the side.

Why Did Soto Betawi Rank So High?

The answer is in the bowl. The broth is creamy but not heavy, the beef is soft, and the toppings add contrast. In the photo behind this ranking, you can see potato cubes, tomato wedges, fried shallots, spring onion and a crisp cracker.

Each topping fixes something. Lime cuts the richness, crackers add crunch, and shallots bring a sweet, toasty smell.

The competition shows how unusual this is. First place went to Vori-vori, a Paraguayan soup of cornmeal-and-cheese dumplings in chicken broth. Second went to Beyran, a spicy lamb soup that people in Gaziantep eat for breakfast.

Is the TasteAtlas Ranking Reliable?

Here is the part most headlines skip. TasteAtlas ranks food by audience ratings, not by expert panels. It says it filters out bot, nationalist and local-patriotic votes, and gives more weight to users it recognizes as knowledgeable.

By mid-August 2026, the soup list had 58,549 ratings. Only 32,981 of them were counted as legitimate. That means roughly 4 in 10 votes were thrown out.

TasteAtlas itself says its rankings should not be seen as the final global verdict on food. Scores also move as new votes arrive. Some outlets report that Soto Betawi has since slipped to fourth on the current list. The September placement is real, but the number can change.

Where Can You Eat Soto Betawi?

Start in Jakarta, where the dish is everywhere. Look for a stall with a big pot of broth on the counter and a line of office workers at lunch.

Order it with rice and acar, squeeze the lime in early, and add the cracker last so it stays crisp.
