Anggun left Jakarta in 1994 with five Indonesian albums behind her. In Europe, almost nobody knew her name. More than three decades later, the French government has given her one of its highest cultural titles.

Anggun C Sasmi, the Indonesian-French singer and actress, has been awarded the title Officier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government, as reported by Medcom.id on 8 October 2026. The honor recognizes her work connecting Eastern and Western culture for nearly three decades. It sits one rank above the Chevalier title she received in 2004.

Who Is Anggun C Sasmi, and Why Does This Honor Matter?

Anggun was born Anggun Cipta Sasmi in Jakarta on 29 April 1974. She started performing at seven and was a teenage rock star by 1989. Then she left for England to try something almost no Indonesian artist had done: build a career in the West.

Here is the surprising part. In 1997, her French-language single "La neige au Sahara" became the most-played French-language song on French radio that year, with about 7,900 airplays. It was sung by an Indonesian who had arrived in Paris as a stranger. The song went gold, selling 250,000 copies.

Think of the sound: a warm, slightly husky voice singing about snow in the desert, with Indonesian roots and a French chorus. That mix is exactly what the award is about.

"By the time I was 20, I'd made five albums."  Anggun

What Is the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres?

France's Ministry of Culture created the order in 1957 to honor people who have made a mark in the arts and literature. It has three ranks. Chevalier is the entry level, Officier is the middle rank, and Commandeur is the highest.

Moving from Chevalier to Officier is not automatic. It usually means the person kept contributing for years after the first honor. Anggun waited about two decades between her two titles, and in that time she did a lot.

What Has She Done Since Her First Honor?

She became a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in 2009. She also judged Asia's Got Talent from 2015 to 2019 and the French version of The Masked Singer from 2019 to 2022.

Her biggest recent shift is into acting. She led the French musical Al Capone in 2023 and has appeared in the 2026 film Levitating and in the American series Reacher. Medcom.id notes that her career is now widening in the acting world.

Why Does This Matter for Indonesian Creatives?

Most Indonesian artists who go global still work mainly in English or inside a niche. Anggun built her base in French, one of the hardest music markets for outsiders. France now says that effort was worth honoring.

For young Indonesian creatives, the lesson is simple. Moving abroad is not enough. Staying consistent for decades is what turns a risky move into a title.
