SM Entertainment revealed a new supergroup on December 26 at midnight KST, comprising female artists from various groups under the label.

They are called "Girls on Top". The teaser picture released through their social media platforms showed artists of different K-Pop generations coming together as BoA, Taeyeon and Hyoyeon of Girls Generation, Wendy and Seulgi of Red Velvet, and Karina and Winter became one supergroup.

Previously, SM Entertainment has debuted a supergroup consisting of male artists from various groups in the label: Taemin of SHINee; Baekhyun and Kai of EXO; Taeyong and Mark of NCT; and Ten and Lucas of NCT and WayV. The group, dubbed "The Avengers of K-pop", was established to break into the American market,

Up close and personal with GOT

Kwon Bo-ah, popularly known as BoA, is likely to be the leader of the new supergroup, as she is the most experienced one out of the bunch. She made her debut back in 2000 when she was only 14 years old. SM Entertainment also signed a contract with the Japanese label Avex Trax, launching her music career in Japan two years later.

After being active in the industry for over 20 years, the 35-years-old singer, songwriter, dancer, record producer, and actress earned her title of "The Queen of K-Pop". She has also hosted the second season of Produce 101 (2017) and a coach in the third season of The Voice of Korea (2020).

As for Taeyeon and Hyoyeon — anyone who listens to K-pop is likely to have heard their "home" group, "Girls' Generation". Debuted in 2007 and rose to fame with their song "Gee" 2009, they are the first Asian girl group whose five music videos surpassed 100 million views on YouTube. They are also the first non-Japanese girl group to have three number-one albums on the Japanese Oricon Album Chart.

Taeyeon made her solo debut in 2015 with "I", selling over 160,000 copies. Since then, she has released over 10 EPs and albums. Meanwhile, her bandmate Hyoyeon has released solo music since 2017 and as a DJ since 2018.

Next in line in the team is Red Velvet, who made their debut five years since the last time the label debuted a girl group, F(x), in 2014 with four members: Irene, Seulgi, Wendy, and Joy. Then, through the release of their first EP, "Ice Cream Cake", a fifth member, Yeri, was added to the group.

Red Velvet is known for having "two sides" of its music. The "red" side usually experiments with electronic, funk, and hip-hop. Meanwhile, the "velvet side focuses on R&B, ballad, and jazz.

Another member, Wendy, recently made her solo debut this year. Last year, her bandmate Seulgi became a part of their group's first sub-unit, "Red Velvet — Irene & Seulgi", before joining the supergroup's line-up.

The youngest members of the supergroup are Karina and Winter of aespa. Along with Ning Ning and Giselle, the two made their debut in November 2020. Their name is a combination of "avatars" and "experience" with the word aspect, which aligns with their concept of having an avatar or AI counterparts in a virtual world.

Although aespa is relatively new to the industry, the group has proven itself formidable. Their first EP, "Savage", has since been certified two times platinum by the KMCA.

Debuting soon

On its Twitter platform, Girls on Top is set to make its debut on a special stage on January 1, 2022.

It is likely on the label's upcoming concert SMTOWN LIVE 2022: SMCU EXPRESS @KWANGYA, a free concert for the worldwide audience through YouTube, Beyond LIVE, LG U+ IDOL LIVE, dan many other platforms. The show is revealed to feature over 10 active groups, solo artists, and DJs under the label.

Their official debut single titled "Step Back" will be released worldwide on January 3, 2022, at 6 p.m. KST.
