FRANCE AND INDONESIA ARE QUIETLY BUILDING THE FUTURE OF FASHION—AND IT’S WAY COOLER THAN YOU THINK
From Batik to the Streets of Paris, This Cross-Cultural Collab Might Be the Most Underrated Fashion Power Move of the Year

If you think fashion diplomacy isn’t a thing, think again. While most headlines are still catching up, Indonesia and France are already deep into a creative alliance that’s flipping the global style script—and Gen Z and millennial creatives should absolutely be paying attention.
At the heart of this stylish revolution? PINTU, a fashion incubation program with a name that literally means “door” in Indonesian—and that’s exactly what it’s doing: opening doors for next-gen designers, artisans, and fashion disruptors from both countries to co-create, innovate, and push boundaries together.
Launched in 2022, PINTU is no longer just a cool cultural exchange—it’s turning into a creative movement. With over 100 designers already empowered through residencies, workshops, and fashion shows, the program is redefining what it means to “go global”—by staying rooted in identity.
What’s Actually Happening?
In case you missed it, Indonesia was the guest of honor at France’s National Day in Paris on July 14—yes, that Bastille Day. And just weeks earlier, both presidents—Prabowo Subianto and Emmanuel Macron—stood in front of Borobudur Temple, name-dropping PINTU as a new model for cultural diplomacy in action.
This July, the 4th edition of PINTU Focus Week is taking things to the next level with an explosion of fashion shows, creative residencies, and a full-day seminar that’s 100% free and open to the public. It’s happening between Jakarta and Yogyakarta from July 21–31, and it’s got the energy of a mini fashion week with global stakes.
Why Should You Care?
Because the future of fashion isn’t being decided in Paris alone anymore—it’s being co-written in places like Jakarta, Yogyakarta, and South Tangerang. The July 29 seminar at IFI Thamrin brings together French haute couture minds and Indonesian design innovators to tackle some of the biggest challenges facing creatives today: sustainability, cultural heritage, market chaos, and what it really means to make ethical fashion.
Plus, the lineup? Straight fire. We're talking Victor Clavelly, the Paris Fashion Week darling with a post-apocalyptic 3D aesthetic. Solène Lescouët, who designs for the Emily in Paris crowd. Louis Vuitton Indonesia’s Simpirwati Simarno. And young Indonesian brands like Dya Sejiwa and Rizkya Batik, collaborating with French design students from École Duperré to create capsule collections born from batik, tenun ikat, and mutual respect.
Not Just Runways — It’s About Revolution
The PINTU x Duperré fashion shows on July 27 promise bold looks and even bolder ideas. From “Echoes of the Future” to “New Scripture,” these shows are storytelling on the runway—telling us that heritage and hype don’t have to be opposites. That upcycling and elegance can exist in the same breath.
And if streetwear is your language, DRP Festival (July 30–Aug 10) brings French street fashion, hip-hop, and breakdance to Jakarta, proving that this partnership isn’t just about tradition—it’s about culture in motion.
TL;DR?
The PINTU program is where Paris meets Jakarta, where couture meets craft, and where young creatives can see themselves in the future of fashion.
So whether you're an aspiring designer, a sustainability geek, or just someone who wants to know where the next wave of global fashion is coming from—this is the moment.
