A volcano that collapsed into the sea in 2018 and quietly rebuilt itself for years just reminded all of Java it's still active. Since Friday night, Gunung Anak Krakatau has been erupting continuously, and by Sunday, the ash wasn't staying near the Sunda Strait anymore. It reached Jakarta's office towers, settled on the tile floor of a mall in Depok, and drew official warnings as far as Central Java.

What is happening, exactly?
Gunung Anak Krakatau, sitting in the Sunda Strait between Sumatra and Java, has been in continuous eruption since 23:07 WIB on September 5, 2026, according to Indonesia's Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation. The eruption has produced a "lava fountain" effect glowing red bursts visible from the Krakatau observation post in Pasauran, Banten, along with rumbling sounds. BMKG has been tracking the resulting ash using Himawari-9 satellite imagery, updated every 30 minutes.
How far has the ash actually spread? Two separate clusters, moving in opposite directions. The first, reaching up to 20,000 feet, moves northeast to south and covers parts of DKI Jakarta, Banten, and West Java, along with nearby waters. The second, reaching up to 50,000 feet, moves southwest to northwest, extending toward Lampung, Bengkulu, and the southern Sunda Strait. Officials from Indonesia's Geological Agency have said the direction, height, and duration of the eruption column directly determine where the ash lands next, which is why the pattern hasn't been stable.
Why does this matter beyond Jakarta? Because this isn't a Jakarta story anymore. Reports of ash also came from Bogor, and the phenomenon is now drawing concern across the wider Jabodetabek area. As the eruption continues and wind patterns over the Sunda Strait and Java shift, officials warn the impact zone can widen with Banten, West Java, and areas further east including parts of Central Java falling within the range that residents and local governments are being told to monitor closely.
Is Soekarno-Hatta Airport still affected? Yes, but it's one data point in a bigger picture. The airport was closed from 01:30 to 05:30 WIB on September 6 after a paper test confirmed ash presence, affecting 33 flights. It has since reopened, but the closure showed how far-reaching a Sunda Strait eruption can be grounding planes hundreds of kilometers from the crater itself.
"The direction of ash dispersal can change within a relatively short time, so it has to be updated based on current meteorological conditions. People should follow official information because ash spread can't be projected from a single eruption event."
That's the counterintuitive part worth sharing: ash doesn't spread like smoke settling over one city. It moves in distinct layers at different altitudes, in different directions, simultaneously which is exactly why one cluster can head toward Central Java while another heads toward Bengkulu, over 500km in the opposite direction, at the same time.
Should you actually be worried? As of September 6, 2026, the volcano's alert status remains unchanged at Level III, meaning officials aren't calling for evacuation or panic just heightened awareness.
