Six aces. Zero double faults. One hour and twenty-nine minutes to do something no Indonesian woman had done at Wimbledon in 23 years.

That's how Janice Tjen opened her Grand Slam debut on grass  by beating a player who once made a US Open final.

Janice Tjen, a 24-year-old tennis player from Jakarta and world No. 42, defeated 22nd-seeded Canadian Leylah Fernandez 6-1, 7-6(3) in the first round of Wimbledon 2026 on Monday, June 29, at Court 18, All England Lawn Tennis Club in London. The win marked her Wimbledon main-draw debut and the first Wimbledon women's singles victory by an Indonesian player since Angelique Widjaja in 2003.

What Happened at Janice Tjen's Wimbledon 2026 Debut?

Tjen didn't ease into it. She broke Fernandez's serve in the very first game, then broke twice more to jump out to a 5-1 lead. The first set was over in a hurry: 6-1.

Fernandez, the 2021 US Open runner-up, found her footing in the second set. Both players held serve until it was locked at 6-6, forcing a tiebreak. Tjen stayed composed and closed it out 7-6(3).

The numbers back up how clean the performance was. Tjen struck 24 winners against just 10 unforced errors and didn't hand Fernandez a single double fault to work with. Fernandez, by contrast, committed 22 unforced errors and failed to convert any of her nine break-point chances.

An Indonesian tennis alumna of Pepperdine University, Tjen wasn't seeded for this tournament  which makes the scoreline more notable, not less.

"It's really, really special to play at Wimbledon for the first time, and to bring Indonesia's name here at Wimbledon," Tjen said, speaking to Wimbledon's official channels after the match.

How Big Is This Win for Indonesian Tennis ?

This wasn't a lucky draw. This was Tjen's third win over Fernandez in 2026 alone  she'd already beaten the Canadian at the Australian Open in January (6-2, 7-6) and at the Dubai Tennis Championships in February (7-6, 6-4).

And the historical weight is real: the last time an Indonesian woman won a singles match at Wimbledon was 2003, when Widjaja beat Evgenia Kulikovskaya. Indonesian tennis has produced strong doubles results in the years since, but singles success at the majors has been rare. Tjen just broke that streak on Centre Court's neighboring courts, not a side show.

What's Next for Janice Tjen at Wimbledon 2026?

Tjen moves into the second round to face Australia's Daria Kasatkina, who beat home favorite Mimi Xu 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 to get there. That match is scheduled for Wednesday, July 1.

Tjen isn't done for the week, either. She's also entered in women's doubles alongside fellow Indonesian Aldila Sutjiadi, where the pair face Britain's Harriet Dart and Maia Lumsden on Thursday, July 2.

For a player who wasn't seeded coming into the tournament, one clean win doesn't make a fortnight. But it buys her something rarer: a second match on the grass she'd never played a Slam on before this week.
