Hungary, under its presidency of the European Union, has once again emphasized its dedication to fostering stronger economic and diplomatic ties with ASEAN nations, particularly Indonesia. This commitment was highlighted by Hungary’s Ambassador to Indonesia, Lilla Karsay, during the 68th Hungarian Revolution and Independence Day reception, which took place on the evening of Thursday, November 7, 2024, in Jakarta.

"As Hungary currently holds the presidency of the European Union, we have a unique opportunity to deepen the ASEAN-EU relationship, with a particular emphasis on Indonesia as a leading ASEAN economy," stated Ambassador Karsay in her speech. She noted that Hungary’s presidency is a platform to promote trade, investment, and sustainable development between the EU and Asia, with Indonesia playing a key role in achieving mutual prosperity and global economic stability.

Karsay further elaborated on Hungary’s strategic focus in strengthening cooperation with Indonesia. With its pivotal role in bridging connections between the EU and Asia, Hungary aims to enhance economic collaboration, particularly in the fields of trade and sustainable investments. The ambassador underscored that Indonesia, as ASEAN's largest economy, remains a priority partner in Hungary’s regional strategy.

The evening also spotlighted ongoing collaborative projects that reflect the deepening partnership between the two nations. One such initiative is the Budapest Waterworks project, which has established 36 clean water management facilities across Indonesia. This project serves as a prime example of how Hungary is actively contributing to Indonesia’s infrastructure development, directly benefiting local communities with improved access to clean water.

Hungary’s commitment to enhancing Indonesia’s transportation infrastructure was also highlighted during the event. As part of its investments in the country, Hungary has made a significant $300 million contribution towards implementing a contactless payment system (Multi Lane Free Flow, MLFF) on Indonesian toll roads. This innovative technology aims to streamline toll collection, reduce traffic congestion, and improve the efficiency of Indonesia’s national transportation network.

Ambassador Karsay concluded by reaffirming Hungary’s resolve to continue strengthening its ties with Indonesia and ASEAN, with the ultimate goal of ensuring a stable, prosperous global economy.
