In a celebration of artistic expression, Global Auction is set to present 148 carefully curated works in its “Southeast Asian, Chinese, Modern & Contemporary Art” auction this October. The event, culminating in a live auction on October 23, 2024, showcases a diverse array of masterpieces from renowned Indonesian and international artists, offering a deep exploration into the region’s rich artistic heritage and modern evolution.

This auction underscores the enduring appeal of Southeast Asian and Chinese art, featuring both historic and contemporary works that reflect the shifting cultural landscapes of the regions. Among the prominent names are Harijadi Sumadidjaja, Affandi, Hendra Gunawan, and Srihadi Soedarsono, each bringing a distinct artistic voice and vision.

Spotlight on Featured Works
One of the highlights is Harijadi Sumadidjaja’s 1956 painting People and Taxes (Rakjat dan Padjak). A realist, Sumadidjaja played a pivotal role in shaping post-independence Indonesian art. This piece captures the tense socio-economic realities of Indonesia in the mid-20th century, featuring a somber color palette that symbolizes the burdens of taxation. Sumadidjaja’s work, with its sweeping brushstrokes and dramatic lighting, stands as a reminder of art's power to comment on societal issues.

Another notable artist, Affandi, whose dynamic and emotive style has made him one of the most celebrated figures in Indonesian art, offers the 1982 work The Maestro and Friend (S. Sudjojono). Affandi's expressive technique is on full display here, showcasing his signature impasto and raw emotional energy that continues to captivate audiences worldwide.

Hendra Gunawan, a key figure in modern Indonesian art, brings a vivid undersea scene to life in Under the Sea (1973). Gunawan’s innovative blend of traditional Indonesian aesthetics with Western modernist techniques is evident in this work, where swirling underwater currents and vibrant marine life are captured with bold colors, creating a fantastical depiction of Indonesia’s natural beauty.

Another standout is Srihadi Soedarsono’s Bedoyo – Beauty of Soul (2014). Known for his masterful use of color and form, Srihadi captures the grace and spirituality of the classical Javanese Bedoyo dance. The dancers, dressed in flowing white, appear ethereal against a stark black background, offering viewers a glimpse into the deep connection between art, culture, and spiritual practice in Java.

A Journey Through Modern and Contemporary Art
In addition to these historic pieces, the auction also features contemporary works that continue to push boundaries in the modern art scene. From Ahmad Sadali’s Embers in the Sunset Sky to Lee Man Fong’s delicate oil paintings of nature, the collection offers a broad spectrum of artistic styles, each piece reflecting unique cultural narratives and personal stories.

This auction not only celebrates the historical significance of Southeast Asian and Chinese art but also its evolution and ongoing relevance in contemporary culture. It is a testament to the region's rich artistic legacy and a reminder of the universal human emotions that art evokes.
