The Embassy of Cyprus in Indonesia marked the 64th anniversary of the Republic of Cyprus’ independence with a unique cultural event, blending the sounds of traditional Balinese Gamelan with modern compositions. The event, hosted by H.E. Mr. Nikos Panayiotou, the Cypriot Ambassador to Indonesia and ASEAN, took place at the Usmar Ismail Hall in Jakarta.

The highlight of the evening was a captivating Gamelan concert, featuring the work of Cypriot composer Andys Skordis. Skordis, an internationally acclaimed composer, has been recognized for his experimental approach to music, fusing contemporary styles with traditional sounds. The piece performed, titled "over...and overr....and overrr...and overr...aand overrrrr (2017)", challenged conventional notions of beginnings and endings. Originally written for a Javanese Gamelan and adapted for the event, the composition created a mesmerizing loop of cyclical melodies, interweaving complex rhythms and flutes.

In his address, Ambassador Panayiotou underscored the historical connection between Cyprus and Indonesia, dating back to the Bandung Conference of 1955. He remarked on the significance of this milestone for both countries and reaffirmed Cyprus’ commitment to strengthening diplomatic and cultural ties with Indonesia. “It has been immensely gratifying to confirm that the prospects in a number of areas are promising indeed, and today we renew our commitment to working at bringing our two countries and peoples even closer together,” the Ambassador said.

Ambassador Panayiotou also reflected on Cyprus’ journey as a member of the European Union and reiterated the nation’s dedication to seeking a peaceful resolution to its ongoing division. “The reunification of our people and our country remains the top priority of Cyprus' foreign policy,” he stated, thanking Indonesia for its continued support of Cyprus’ sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Despite the diplomatic challenges, the ambassador emphasized optimism for the future, particularly through the power of culture and youth. “Even in optimism that might be in short supply, we must at least retain hope, and much of our hope we place on our young and creative people,” he added, highlighting the evening’s musical performance as a symbol of this hope.

The event concluded with words of gratitude from the ambassador, who thanked sponsors, the Embassy’s Indonesian partners, and the wider community for their ongoing support. He also expressed his deep appreciation to the Embassy of Cyprus team, whose efforts were integral to the success of the celebration.

The evening’s cultural fusion was not only a tribute to Cyprus' rich history but also a celebration of the strong ties between Cyprus and Indonesia, a relationship that continues to grow with shared cultural exchanges and diplomatic cooperation.
