Once upon a time, 62 years ago, on 6 January 1946, Yogyakarta was the capital of Indonesia, the hub of Javanese culture, and the birthplace of many influential people. Until now, the city where Keraton of Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwana X still stands remains its traditional feel, yet a developing metropolitan vibe is emerging.

Yogya pulls influences from a variety of cultures which results in the blend of the old and new eras. With the fusion, the city attracted Indonesians and foreigners to visit. With holidays coming and the world recovering, perhaps you are planning on a romantic getaway with your lover to make up for the time lost during the pandemic.

If you are planning to do so, we recommend you make a reservation at these five romantic restaurants in Yogyakarta. Not only that they offer delicious dishes, but they also bestowed you with a warm ambiance from their unique and traditional concepts.

Mang Engking
Mang Engking resembles dining in a castle-like restaurant similar to the kings and queens. The fairytale restaurant makes it a place where you don't see or experience every day dining in.

Their specialty is fish and shrimp that were bred and lived in their serene ponds surrounding the restaurant. Upon arrival, each guest will be taken to the table in a traditional bamboo 'Gubuk' which is a type of hut at the water's edge. Therefore, privacy is guaranteed.

Indoor dining is also available at the castle dining hall. When waiting for the food, you can also dip your feet in the waters where little fish can nibble them. Take it as a personal pedicure.

Mang Engking Restaurant has been popping around Indonesia, but it can be assured that it is the only one with a castle. Located in Sleman of Yogya, the restaurant is open daily from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
