In collaboration with Komnas Perempuan, the British Embassy in Jakarta successfully hosted the Ending Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Talks on Monday. Held as part of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign, the event brought together social organizations, community representatives, and policymakers to discuss strategies for addressing gender-based violence (GBV) and promoting gender equality in Indonesia.

A Call for Collective Action
The discussion emphasized the urgent need for stronger collaboration between government bodies, civil society, and local communities to prevent and address GBV. Minister-Counsellor Development UKMis ASEAN, Amanda McLoughlin, highlighted the importance of sustainable efforts, stating, “The fight against gender-based violence requires not only policy changes but also grassroots action and continuous education. By fostering open dialogue and strengthening partnerships, we can take meaningful steps towards a safer and more equitable society.”

Komnas Perempuan echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the role of survivor-centered approaches and the need for improved protection mechanisms. Speakers also stressed the importance of community engagement in raising awareness and changing harmful social norms that perpetuate violence against women and marginalized groups.

Key Takeaways and Next Steps
Among the key insights from the event were:

  • The Need for Preventive Education – Raising awareness from an early age can help challenge gender stereotypes and reduce the risk of GBV.
  • Stronger Legal Frameworks – Ensuring laws and policies are effectively implemented is crucial in protecting survivors and holding perpetrators accountable.
  • Community-Based Solutions – Empowering local communities to take an active role in prevention efforts fosters a collective responsibility in combating GBV.

In the closing session, a brief Q&A allowed participants to engage directly with McLoughlin and the Komnas Perempuan Commissioner. Questions revolved around policy implementations, community-driven initiatives, and how different sectors can contribute to the movement.

Commitment to a Future Without GBV
The Ending GBV Talks underscored the ongoing commitment of the UK Embassy and Komnas Perempuan to promoting gender equality and strengthening efforts to end violence against women. As part of the 16 Days of Activism campaign, the event served as a reminder that tackling GBV requires sustained collaboration, awareness, and action at all levels of society.

Through continued partnerships and community-driven initiatives, stakeholders reaffirmed their dedication to ensuring a safer and more inclusive future for all.
