With Bali's reputation as a tropical paradise adorned with sun-kissed beaches and lush jungles, the provincial capital of Denpasar often slips under the radar of many tourists. However, Denpasar has emerged as a hidden gem, boasting a rich tapestry of historical treasures, vibrant music scene, burgeoning coffee culture, and eclectic shopping experiences.

In a bid to showcase the essence of Denpasar's charm and preserve its cultural heritage, the Denpasar City Tourism Office recently unveiled an innovative initiative - a complimentary horse-drawn carriage service for tourists. Since its inauguration on the 3rd of February, this nostalgic mode of transportation has garnered immense popularity among both domestic and international travelers, with over 1,000 tourists indulging in the free rides across the city's tourism hotspots.

Ni Luh Putu Riyastiti, the Head of the Denpasar City Tourism Office, underscored the significance of this initiative, stating, "This free float service is one of the City Government’s efforts to preserve traditional modes of transportation typical to Denpasar City."

The introduction of horse-drawn carriages harks back to a bygone era when these quaint vehicles were a common sight traversing the streets of Bali before the advent of modern automobiles. However, concerns regarding the welfare of the horses have been raised, especially in light of previous investigations revealing inadequate conditions for animals involved in tourism activities in Bali.

Riyastiti assured reporters that stringent measures are in place to ensure the well-being of the horses utilized in the carriage service. Regular inspections conducted by the Denpasar City Agriculture Service aim to maintain the health and welfare of the horses, while cart drivers receive a daily income from the government to support their livelihoods.

Tourists are invited to embark on this nostalgic journey through Denpasar's Heritage Zone every Saturday and Sunday, from 9 am to 4 pm. With two meeting points strategically located at Tegal Terminal on Jalan Imam Bonjol and Jalan Sulawesi Utara, visitors can hop aboard one of the eight decorated carts for a leisurely 30-minute ride.

The initiative not only promises an enchanting experience for tourists but also serves as a platform to educate the public about Denpasar's rich history and cultural significance. I Gusti Agung Komang Widnyana, Head of the Tourism Destination Division, emphasized the project's dual objective of promoting tourism and preserving heritage.

To enhance the tourist experience, cart drivers are equipped with barcodes containing information about Denpasar's prominent attractions. Furthermore, upcoming training sessions will empower drivers with knowledge about tourism and traffic regulations, ensuring a safe and informative journey for visitors.

Among Denpasar's iconic landmarks awaiting exploration is the Bajra Sandhi Monument, a testament to Bali's enduring spirit and resilience. Nestled within the verdant expanse of Lapangan Puputan Renon Park, this majestic monument offers panoramic vistas of the cityscape.

Foreign tourists eager to delve into Denpasar's rich tapestry can purchase entry tickets to the Bajra Sandhi Monument, granting access to its historical exhibits and awe-inspiring views. Be sure to ascend to the Utamaning Utama Mandala room atop the monument for a breathtaking panorama of Denpasar and its surroundings.

As Denpasar unveils its cultural treasures and embraces sustainable tourism initiatives, visitors are invited to embark on a journey of discovery through the heart of Bali's vibrant capital.
