NETFLIX'S "GADIS KRETEK" CAPTIVATES AUDIENCES WITH HISTORICAL FICTION ADAPTATION
Exploring Timeless Themes: "Gadis Kretek" - A Tale of Love, Tradition, and Determination
Netflix's latest offering, "Gadis Kretek" or "Cigarette Girl," has become a sensation since its release on November 2, 2023. The five-episode series, adapted from Ratih Kumala's historical fiction novel of the same name, is a collaborative effort by directors Kamila Andini and Ifa Isfansyah.
Starring the talented Dian Sastrowardoyo, the series unfolds across two different time periods, adding an intriguing layer to the narrative. Alongside Sastrowardoyo, the ensemble cast includes Ario Bayu, Putri Marino, Arya Saloka, Sheila Dara Aisha, Ine Febriyanti, Tissa Biani, Ibnu Jamil, Rukman Rosadi, Tutie Kirana, Dimas Aditya, Winky Wiryawan, Pritt Timothy, Verdi Solaiman, and Nungki Kusumastuti.
Synopsis of "Gadis Kretek"
The story revolves around Lebas (Arya Saloka), who faithfully accompanies his ailing father, Soeraja (Ario Bayu), in the hospital. His family, owners of the Djagad Raja kretek business since the post-Dutch colonial era, faces unexpected challenges.
As Soeraja's condition worsens, he utters the name "Jeng Yah" repeatedly, leaving Lebas puzzled. Despite being the youngest, Lebas often finds himself underestimated by his siblings. When he shares his father's mysterious cries with them, they dismiss him.
Lebas embarks on a journey to uncover the enigmatic "Jeng Yah." This quest transports the narrative to a bygone era when the kretek industry in the city of M was under the control of the influential Idrus Muria (Rukman Rosadi).
Idrus Muria has two daughters, Dasiyah (Dian Sastrowardoyo) and Rukayah (Tissa Biani). Dasiyah, the eldest, struggles to find a suitable match but in return, she eventually inherits her father's successful kretek business. Despite her expertise in selecting the finest tobacco and her ambition to create the best kretek sauce, societal norms of that time hinder her progress.
Dasiyah's dreams face resistance due to the prevailing gender biases. While her father appreciates her cigarette blends, others remain skeptical of a woman's ability to craft exceptional kretek sauce.
The narrative takes an interesting turn when Soeraja, a young and agile man, is introduced to Dasiyah's kretek sauce. Impressed, he not only praises her concoction but also learns the art of cigarette rolling from Dasiyah.
Back in the present, Lebas continues his search for "Jeng Yah." Dr. Arum (Putri Marino), a collaborator in this quest, provides crucial clues. Together, they strive to unveil the mystery of Jeng Yah before Lebas's father passes away.
"Gadis Kretek" weaves together elements of history, romance, and societal challenges, creating a compelling narrative that keeps viewers hooked. The series has received acclaim for its stellar cast, intricate plot, and the seamless blend of two distinct time periods. As audiences eagerly anticipate the next episodes, "Gadis Kretek" stands as a testament to the creative prowess of Indonesian filmmakers.
