MOROCCAN DAY IN JAKARTA: CELEBRATING 25 YEARS OF KING MOHAMMED VI'S REIGN
Moroccan Day in Jakarta Highlights Diplomatic Ties and Celebrates King Mohammed VI's 25-Year Reign
On July 30, 2024, the Moroccan Embassy in Jakarta hosted a grand Moroccan Day celebration, marking the 25th anniversary of King Mohammed VI's reign. The event, held at the Moroccan Ambassador's official residence in Kebayoran Baru, attracted a diverse group of dignitaries and guests, including Yeni Wahid, daughter of the late President Gus Dur.
The celebration brought together hundreds of officials from various countries, underscoring Morocco's growing diplomatic presence. Attendees included Sheikh Mohamed Ahmed Salim Al Shanfari, Ambassador of Oman; Dr. Abdulla Salem Obaid Salem AlDhaheri, UAE Ambassador; Dr. Georges Abou Zeid, representative of the Lebanese Embassy; Svitlana Bondarenko, First Secretary of the Ukrainian Embassy; and Zuhair S.M. Alshun, Palestinian Ambassador.
The Moroccan Ambassador to Indonesia, Dr. Ouadia Benabdella, led the festivities alongside his team, including Deputy Head of Mission Mohammed Faouzi Touiger and diplomat Hassan Khafi. The event also saw the presence of Miss Houria, a prominent Moroccan artist well-known in Jakarta.
Among the Indonesian officials present were Fadel Mohammad, Deputy Speaker of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR); Ani Nigeriawati, Director of Public Diplomacy at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; and Nico Barito, Special Envoy of the President of Seychelles. Various representatives from Indonesian government ministries, such as the Ministry of Communications and Informatics, Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy, and Ministry of Agriculture, also joined the celebration.
In his speech, Ambassador Benabdella highlighted the progress made under King Mohammed VI’s leadership, including substantial reforms and development projects aimed at bolstering Morocco's global standing. He emphasized Morocco’s role as a key regional player and its commitment to social cohesion and territorial integrity.
Benabdella also announced that Morocco would soon host two major international football events: the 2024-2025 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2030 World Cup, which Morocco will co-host with Spain and Portugal. He called for support from Indonesia and other nations to ensure the success of these significant events.
Yeni Wahid’s presence at the celebration was a testament to the strong ties between Indonesia and Morocco. She expressed her support for the ongoing cooperation between the two nations and expressed hope for the continued growth of their bilateral relationship.
The Moroccan Day festivities concluded with a traditional birthday cake cutting ceremony, followed by a reception featuring Moroccan culinary delights such as Couscous, Pastilla, and various breads. Guests also enjoyed Moroccan tea served in traditional desert style.
The event was further enriched by the presence of Wilson Lalengke, Chairman of the Indonesian Citizen Journalists Association (PPWI) and President of the Indonesian Sahara Morocco Brotherhood (Persisma), along with PPWI national executives Julian Caisar, Mbak Wina, and Irfan Bainil Jusni. Key business figures, including Harry Lim, Chief Commissioner of PT. Darma Sarana Utama, and Karlina Damiri, owner of Taxi Bluebird and Honorary Consul of Monaco for Indonesia, were also in attendance, highlighting the strong ties between Morocco and the Indonesian business community.
