GOOGLE RELEASES MAJOR UPDATE TO AI MODEL GEMINI WITH CUSTOMIZABLE “GEMS” AND ENHANCED IMAGE GENERATION
In a bold move to challenge OpenAI's dominance in the AI landscape, Google has announced a significant update to its flagship AI model, Gemini. The update, unveiled on Wednesday, introduces customizable “Gems,” a new feature designed to offer users a modular set of AI assistants tailored to a variety of tasks.
The latest version of Gemini now includes “Gems,” which allows users to create personalized AI assistants for projects ranging from coding and career advice to creative brainstorming. First previewed at Google I/O in May, Gems are available to Gemini Advanced, Business, and Enterprise users. Google promises that Gems can remember detailed instructions to streamline repetitive tasks and improve efficiency.
“Gems empower users to assemble a team of experts to tackle challenging projects, brainstorm ideas, or refine social media posts,” said a Google spokesperson. “Additionally, our AI-powered rewrite feature helps users fine-tune prompts to better suit their needs.”
The new feature also enables users to share the outputs of their Gems via public links, which can be integrated into Google Docs or Gmail. However, shared Gems remain personal, and interactions cannot be continued by others accessing the shared links.
In conjunction with this update, Google has integrated its AI image generator, Imagen 3, into Gemini. Launched earlier this month, Imagen 3 offers advanced image creation capabilities, allowing users to generate high-quality images from simple text descriptions. Despite the enhanced features, Google maintains a cautious approach and does not support the generation of images featuring people, following previous issues with problematic image outputs.
“Imagen 3 sets a new benchmark for image quality, capable of producing photorealistic landscapes, textured oil paintings, and whimsical claymation scenes,” Google stated. “We are committed to ensuring our image generation tools adhere to strict guidelines, prohibiting images of identifiable individuals, minors, or excessively violent or sexual content.”
While Gemini's image generation capabilities currently exclude human depictions, Google assures users that advancements in this area are forthcoming. The company plans to gradually roll out these features, incorporating user feedback to refine and expand the tool's functionality.
As Google continues to navigate the competitive AI market, its latest updates to Gemini and Imagen 3 signal a robust commitment to innovation and user experience. The company aims to further enhance its AI offerings, addressing challenges and expanding its capabilities in the coming months.
