The COVID-19 pandemic second wave in the middle of the dry season, like now, push people to maintain their health. Dr. Jenna Macciochi, immunologist and writer of Immunity: The Science of Staying Well, says that the immunity system is the first line to fight infection and diseases.

“Although there is no scientific evidence on how to boost your immunity, we could change our habit to be more healthy to maintain our immunity. So it can respond properly when viruses attack and can repair the damages that occur.

Drinking coconut water has become ‘a trend’. The taste is naturally sweet and hydrating. In fact, coconut water is loaded with several important nutrients, including minerals that many people don’t get enough of.

According to Healthline, coconut water is rich in nutrients and vitamins like riboflavin, niacin, thiamine, pyridoxine, and folates. Coconut water has antiviral and antibacterial properties that can help increase your body’s immune system and fight viral infections like the flu.

It may have antioxidants

According to research conducted by the Global Journal of Biology, Agriculture, and Health Sciences in 2016, coconut water contains antioxidants that may help modify free radicals, so they no longer cause harm. In one 2012 study, insulin-resistant rats on a high fructose diet were treated with coconut water. Free radical activity decreased, as did blood pressure, triglycerides, and insulin levels.

Another study from 2014 found that damaged rat livers showed significant improvement in oxidative stress when treated with coconut water compared with livers that received no treatment. A third study from 2016 highlighted the benefits of coconut water extract on rats fed a high-fat diet. Not only did the coconut water help decrease cholesterol markers, but it also showed “antioxidant potency.”

While these studies are interesting, it’s important to note that no studies involving humans and the antioxidant power of coconut water have been done to date, and each of the animal studies used different dosages and parameters.

When is the best time to drink coconut water?

Early morning before you have your breakfast

Drinking coconut water first thing in the morning on an empty stomach can help in many ways. Coconut water contains lauric acid, which helps in boosting your immunity, kick-starting your metabolism, and facilitating weight loss. Pregnant women are often recommended to have coconut water to fight dehydration and constipation. It also helps relieve morning sickness and heartburn, which are common symptoms of pregnancy.

Before or after a workout

As shared earlier, coconut water is a great natural sports drink that helps hydrate your body and boost energy before a workout. Whereas after a workout, coconut water helps in replenishing the lost electrolytes during the intense session. Drinking coconut water helps in fighting fatigue and exhaustion and is one of the best energy-boosting drinks.
