AVRIL LAVIGNE‘S 'SK8ER BOI' TO GET MOVIE ADAPTATION
"Can I make it any more obvious?"
People say the trend returns every decade, but the current alt-pop rock sound boom brings forth a memory of an almost 20-year-old song — Avril Lavigne's "Sk8er Boi".
The lady rocker recently revealed in an interview on the iHeartRadio podcast "She Is The Voice" that there are plans for the iconic song to receive the big-screen treatment.
"Recently with it being almost the 20th anniversary, a lot of people have been asking me to play this song on some TV shows, so it keeps getting brought back up and people will always reference it to me," she explained. "And so, I'm actually going to turn this song into a film… and take it to the next level."
Just in case you haven't heard the lyrics yet, the 2002 banger "Sk8er Boi" features a potential storyline in which a preppy ballerina girl rejects the skater boy in baggy clothes. Half a decade later, the ballerina girl sees the man she rejected "rockin' on MTV".
In the music video, Lavigne portrays herself as his new girlfriend as she narrates the story through the song, highlighting the protagonist who wishes she had followed her heart regardless of societal expectations.
"You know what it was like in high school, you have all the different groups and cliques, and there's like skaters, preps and jocks. It's kind of like a missed opportunity at love," said the Canadian singer.
Lavigne also said that "Sk8er Boi" is one of her favorite songs to play live, explaining how this song has been so iconic in the era, aside from the fact that this song also marked her international debut.
The track, which was co-written and produced by Scott Spock, Lauren Christy and Graham Edwards, was part of her 2002's "Let Go" album, said to be the best-selling album of the 21st century by a Canadian artist.
Rumour has it that back in 2003, a year after the song hit Billboard, Paramount Studios hired "ER" writer and producer David Zabel to make an adaptation of the story, but unfortunately, the plans fell through. However, there isn't much information about the film just yet so far.
The sk8er girl career
Aged only 16 when she signed her first record deal, Lavigne is considered an iconic musician in the development of pop-punk music. This mainly comes from the fact that she paved the way for female-driven, punk-influenced pop music in the early 2000s.
She started her career quite early, and for that, she won a world record. Avril achieved a Guinness World Record for being the youngest female solo artist to top the UK album chart, on January 11, 2003, at the age of 18 years and 106 days.
Related to music, she has received a total of 169 awards and eight Grammy Awards nominations, three American Music Awards nominations, one Brit Award nomination, and one MTV Video Music Award. The now 37-year-old musician had sold more than 30 million singles and 40 million copies of her albums worldwide and was named Billboard named Lavigne the number 10 pop artist in the "Best of the 2000s" chart in 2009.
She once had a long hiatus after announcing that she had Lyme disease in 2015, but Lavigne hasn't pulled any brakes after that with new works, appearances and collaborations. Recently, she became a cameo in Willow Smith's music video for "G R O W".
During her appearance at the 2021 MTV Video Music Awards in September 2021, Lavigne confirmed in an interview that new music was to be released in October. Two months later, she announced a deal with DTA Records and later released her new single titled "Bite Me" on November 10.
