The United States Embassy has announced a new cultural preservation grant as part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen ties with Indonesia. This initiative, designed to protect both tangible and intangible cultural heritage, underscores the U.S.'s commitment to nurturing a long-standing relationship with Indonesia, which marks its 75th year of diplomatic relations in 2024.

Public Diplomacy Officer Emily Magaziner highlighted that the U.S. Embassy will continue to support Indonesia’s cultural preservation through the Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation (AFCP), a grant program dedicated to conserving significant cultural assets. The program allocates US$275,000 (approximately Rp4 billion) every two years, funding projects that safeguard historic sites and promote the preservation of traditional arts and music.

Past projects funded by the AFCP have had a lasting impact on Indonesia’s cultural landscape. Notable initiatives include the restoration of historical museums in Jakarta, such as the Maritime Museum, History Museum, and National Museum of Indonesia. These efforts have helped preserve invaluable collections and artifacts, enabling the public to engage with Indonesia’s rich heritage.

During the U.S.-Indonesia 75th-anniversary celebration at the Yogyakarta Palace, Emily emphasized the importance of preserving Indonesia’s cultural legacy through initiatives like the AFCP. "Preservation through museum collection documentation" was a focal point of her remarks, stressing how the documentation and conservation of cultural materials ensure that future generations can access and appreciate the country’s history.

Looking forward, the U.S. Embassy aims to expand its cultural partnerships with a diverse range of Indonesian art groups. These collaborations are expected to further solidify the deep cultural connection between the two nations, fostering mutual understanding and reinforcing the enduring friendship that has developed over the past 75 years. The Embassy's ongoing cultural engagement continues to be a pillar of the broader U.S.-Indonesia partnership, celebrating the shared values of creativity, history, and preservation.
