Women in movies are mostly reserved as a side character or a romantic interest for the male protagonist to interact with. Most prominently are movies in the past where women are set to be a damsel in distress waiting for the hero to rescue her while contributing absolutely nothing to the story. Women are basically served as a plot device in such movies.

But in recent years, a few filmmakers realized that women can also lead action movies and kick-ass just as good or better than male-led movies. Take a look at these action movies below, all led by a woman.

Salt (2010)
Salt is another movie starring Angelina Jolie now in another genre of an action thriller. Jolie is now called Evelyn Salt wrongly accused as a Russian sleeper agent. Her mission now is to clear her name without getting caught.

Salt used to be created with Tom Cruise in mind as the main protagonist, but Brian Helgeland changed the script so that Jolie would star instead.

Black Widow (2021)
Coming from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Natasha Romanoff played by Scarlett Johansson is set to relive her past life once more. The “Black Widow” must face her spy self and the broken relationships she dealt with before becoming an Avenger.

Tomb Raider
Tomb Raider came first to the entertainment industry as a very successful video game franchise with a woman main character, Lara Croft. The first game was launched in 1996 and the franchise is still giving out games to this day with the latest being 2018 titled “Shadow of the Tomb Raider” available on both consoles and PC.

The success of the Tomb Raider video games bore a lot of movie adaptations. The first movie starring Angelina Jolie was titled “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider” launched in 2001 and was successful enough to have a sequel titled “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – The Cradle of Life” in 2003. The more recent movie starred Alicia Vikander titled “Tomb Raider” was released in 2018.

The first movie (2001) followed the adventure of Lara Croft who is on a quest on finding an ancient artifact before the Illuminati get it first. In the sequel (2003), Croft is again on a journey across continents to find Pandora’s box said to be filled with a bioweapon, vulnerable to be misused with evil intentions.

The latest movie (2018) starring Vikander, follows the story of how Lara Croft tries to find her father who disappeared on his latest journey.
