INDONESIA JUST TURNED ITS INDEPENDENCE DAY PARADE INTO A ROLLING ART EXHIBITION
Indonesia's HUT ke-81 carnival sent 32 ministry floats through Jakarta, from a Rumah Gadang on wheels to a 1,500-drone finale. Here's what happened.
A giant, neon-outlined Rumah Gadang rolled down Jalan MH Thamrin on a truck bed. Behind it, dancers from the Jember Fashion Carnival spun in feathered headdresses while a cartoon character named Si Juki waved at the crowd. This wasn't a fashion week finale it was Indonesia's government celebrating its 81st birthday.
Karnaval HUT ke-81 RI the official carnival marking Indonesia's 81st Independence Day took over central Jakarta on Monday, August 17, 2026. Organized by the Kementerian Ekonomi Kreatif/Badan Ekonomi Kreatif (Kemenekraf) together with dozens of other ministries and state institutions, the parade sent 32 decorated floats from Monas through Bundaran HI, ending at Taman Atas Skatepark. It kicked off at 6:45 PM WIB and folded into the city's broader "Malam Merdeka" street celebrations, which included a light show involving 1,500 drones.

What made this year's carnival different?
Every past HUT parade has had costumes and trucks. This year leaned harder into cross-sector storytelling. The Kementerian Pariwisata, Kemenekraf, and Kementerian Kebudayaan combined forces on a single float built around a full-scale Rumah Gadang, the traditional peaked-roof house of the Minangkabau people, and brought in Jember Fashion Carnival performers alongside Puteri Indonesia 2026 Agnes Aditya Rahajeng and Puteri Indonesia Lingkungan 2026 Victoria Titisari Kosasieputri to represent Indonesia's tourism ambassadors on the road. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (Kemkomdigi) ran a float themed "Anyaman Indonesia Digital" a woven-pattern metaphor for a connected, digitally protected nation.
Then there was the Sekretariat Kabinet's truck: a black float wrapped in glowing pink-and-blue city skyline graphics, with Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya standing on top waving a full-size Merah Putih flag. As his vehicle passed President
Prabowo Subianto and Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka, Teddy dropped into a formal salute before picking the flag back up a small, unscripted moment that circulated widely on social media within hours.
"Karnaval Kemerdekaan bukan sekadar pawai tetapi akan menjadi potensi pengembangan kreativitas," said Dessy Ruhati, Secretary of Kemenekraf, describing the parade as more than a march a showcase for national creative talent.
Why did dozens of ministries join one parade?
Officials framed the carnival as a visual report card. Each float was built to reflect its ministry's work over the past two years under the Prabowo-Gibran administration, touching six national priority programs: food and energy self-sufficiency, free nutritious meals, "sekolah rakyat" schools, free health checks, Koperasi Merah Putih cooperatives, and the 3 million subsidized homes program. Instead of a press release, the government handed the public a night parade to walk through it.
Was it free to attend?
Yes. The route ran through public streets Monas, Patung Kuda, Sarinah, and Bundaran HI with no ticketing. Crowds gathered along the barricades from early evening, drawn by the drumline processions, video mapping installations, and the drone display that closed out the night.
