Hyundai Motor Group has unveiled the Mobile Eccentric Droid, or MobED, a revolutionary small mobility platform that uses cutting-edge robotics technologies.

The MobED is a compact mobility platform that features a flat, rectangular frame and four large wheels. Its independent suspension allows the platform to maintain its body position and adapt to varying road conditions.

Dong Jin Hyun, the head of Hyundai's Robotics Laboratory, said that the goal was to develop a platform that addresses the limitations of existing service robots and addresses the needs of all people.

In its video launch, the company showcased some of the unusual use-cases of the eccentric mobile droid. For instance, it can be used to carry a baby stroller. It can also be used to serve up a variety of beverages, such as champagne glasses.

"We have developed the MobED platform to overcome the limitations of existing indoor guide and service robots while maximizing its usability in cities by dramatically improving the platform's overall mobility," Hyun said. "We are also looking ahead to assess how potential users of MobED will further expand their needs and use for this type of technology."

MobED's innovative technologies
By using an advanced "Eccentric Wheel" drive, the MobED can adapt to different road conditions and maintain its optimum posture. It also has three motor mounts that provide power and precise steering, braking, and altitude control systems.

The arrangement of the wheels allows the vehicle to maintain its omnidirectional movement for a stable ride.

"The eccentric mechanism-based posture control system also stabilizes the body attitude by adjusting the height of each wheel according to the ground environment," Hyundai's official statement read. "The MobED's 12-inch pneumatic tires further help to absorb bumps and vibrations."

The MobED measures 67 centimeters long, has a width of 60 centimeters, a height of 33 centimeters, and weighs 50 kilograms. It can run at speeds of up to 30 kilometers per hour if put in high-speed driving, which brings its height to 45 centimeters. The mobility vehicle also features a 2-kWh battery to last approximately four hours on a single charge.

The company noted that the MobED could be used for various applications, such as delivering packages and filming equipment. Its compact size and ability to handle different types of terrain make it an ideal technology solution for service robots that operate in harsh environments.

Moreover, MobED can also be used as a mobility aid for the elderly or disabled. It can also be mounted on a cart or utilized as a leisure vehicle.
