DUTCH EMBASSY AND PROJECT MULTATULI CELEBRATE PRESS FREEDOM AT #WORLDPRESSFREEDOMDAY 2023 IN INDONESIA
Spectacular Event Emphasizes the Crucial Role of Media Ahead of 2024 Indonesian Elections
In a grand celebration of press freedom, the Dutch Embassy in Indonesia and Project Multatuli collaborated to organize a remarkable #WorldPressFreedomDay 2023 event in mid-June. The festivities, which took place in three cities—Surabaya, Jakarta, and Labuan Bajo—aimed to highlight the power of the press and its vital role in shaping the world we live in.
The heart of the celebration in Jakarta was at the prestigious Erasmus Huis on June 3rd. The event commenced with a thought-provoking film screening of 'Wisisi Nit Meke,' a short film exploring the world of electronic music from West Papua.
Maresa Oosterman, the Head of Political Affairs at the Dutch Embassy in Indonesia, delivered a compelling opening speech, underscoring the significance of media in the lead-up to the 2024 Indonesian elections. She emphasized the media's role in amplifying the voices of the people and safeguarding against the spread of misinformation and hoaxes. In a captivating discussion that followed, members of the Press Council, Jentera academics, Sinar Pidie journalists, and Project Multatuli engaged in meaningful conversations about the future of small media in Indonesia, particularly in the face of an upcoming politically charged year.
The event offered an array of captivating performances that enthralled the audience. A mesmerizing theater performance titled 'Kinrohosi dan Hikayat Tolak Bala' showcased a spectacular collaboration between Lampaq Teater Sendratasik UNU and Sekolah Pedalangan Wayang Sasak, captivating the attendees with their artistic brilliance.
Attendees were further treated to laughter and entertainment as hilarious stand-up comedy acts took the stage. Electrifying musical performances added to the jubilant atmosphere, and unforgettable karaoke sessions provided an opportunity for everyone to join in the celebration. Mind-bending quizzes tested the audience's knowledge and brought a fun yet informative element to the event.
The celebration reached a pinnacle as Project Multatuli marked its second anniversary, commemorating two years of unwavering dedication to the cause of press freedom. The organization's relentless efforts in advocating for a free press were honored and applauded by all present.
"We want to extend our heartfelt gratitude to each and every one of you who supported this incredible event," said the organizers. "Let's keep the spirit of press freedom alive and thriving, igniting change and inspiring the world. Together, we can make a difference!"
The #WorldPressFreedomDay celebration not only brought people together in a joyous occasion but also emphasized the significance of a free and vibrant media landscape in shaping societies. With the 2024 Indonesian elections on the horizon, the event served as a timely reminder of the media's responsibility in fostering transparency, deliver reliable information, and promote open dialogue.
As the festivities came to a close, the participants left with a renewed commitment to championing press freedom in Indonesia and beyond. The collaborative efforts of the Dutch Embassy, Project Multatuli, and all attendees served as a testament to the enduring power of the press and its pivotal role in shaping a better future for all.
