Encanto is a 2021 animated film by Walt Disney Studios directed by Jared Bush and Byron Howard with co-director Charise Castro Smith. The movie is co-written by Bush and produced by Yvett Merino and Clark Spencer, with original songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda. 

It was released in the US and Canada on November 24, 2021, with the initial release on November 3rd at the El Capitan Theatre in Los Angeles. It has a 30-day theatrical run due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It is then released in DisneyPlus on December 24th, 2021. 

Encanto's original songs went viral and reached number one on the US Billboard 200 and UK Compilation Albums charts. “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” and “Surface Pressure” were the two songs that managed to top the charts with the former topping the US Billboard Hot 100 and UK Singles Charts for weeks.

Synopsis and cast
The movie tells a story of an extraordinary family, the Madrigals, who lives hidden in the mountains of Colombia, inside a magical house in a wondrous, charming place called an Encanto. This place has blessed a unique gift from super strength to the power of healing to every child in the family except one, Mirabel. The conflict starts when she discovers Encanto magical surrounding is endangered. Mirabel as the only ordinary Madrigal, raises up to save her family.

The main character, Mirabel Madrigal, is voiced by Stephanie Beatriz who is known for her role in “Brooklyn Nine-Nine.” Abuela Alma Madrigal is voiced by Maria Cecilia Botero, who also voiced the character in the Spanish language dubbing of the film. John Leguizamo is voicing Bruno Madrigal, Mirabel’s 50-year-old ostracized uncle who can see the future. 

Felix Madrigal, Mirabel’s uncle, is voiced by Mauro Castillo, who also voiced him in the Spanish-language dub of the film. Pepe Madrigal is voiced by Carolina Gaitan, Mirabel’s auntie and Felix’s wife who can control the weather with her mood. Jessica Darrow is voicing Mirabel’s second-oldest sister, Luisa Madrigal with Julieta Madrigal, Mirabel’s mother is voiced by Angie Cepeda. 

Encanto accolades

The film also received critical acclaim for its characterization, music, animation, voice acting, emotional depth, and cultural fidelity upon its release. 

Encanto won the Best Animated Film category at the Academy Awards, the Golden Globes, the BAFTAs, the Producers Guild of America, and the National Board of Review in 2021. Additionally, the track “Dos Oruguitas” by Sebastian Yatra and the film’s score were nominated for the Best Original Song and Score respectively at the 94th Academy Awards.
