COMBATING BURNOUT: KEY STRATEGIES FOR MENTAL AND PHYSICAL WELL-BEING IN THE WORKPLACE
Work Pressure Leading to Burnout: What Needs to Be Done?
Work-related pressure has emerged as a primary cause of physical and mental exhaustion, commonly known as burnout. Various factors contribute to this phenomenon, including excessive workload, inadequate staffing, poor management, toxic work culture, and, most importantly, insufficient support for employees.
The World Health Organization (WHO) identifies burnout as the result of chronic job-related stress that cannot be effectively managed. "Signs of burnout include reduced motivation, poor communication, unhealthy behavior in the workplace, and heavy workloads," stated psychologist Dr. Jo Perkins.
"Burnout is cumulative, and its early symptoms are evident, often referred to as poor organization, difficulty adapting, or a need to work harder, which tends to exacerbate the problem," she added.
Experts emphasize that neglecting burnout can be perilous for physical, mental, and emotional health, impairing individuals' ability to function normally. Perkins also notes that this condition can escalate into severe mental issues such as depression and anxiety.
Avoid Multitasking
Psychologist Lynda Folan suggests freeing the family space from the smartphone zone as one way to address burnout. Set specific times for phone-free zones to create a separation between work and personal life.
You can also engage in other enjoyable activities such as sleep, exercise, relaxation, recovery, and play. According to therapist Melissa Day, one of the easiest ways to combat burnout is to soak up the sun's rays every day.
"Vitamin D is an incredible mood regulator and the most crucial nutrient for hormone production," she says.
If unable to cope on your own, seek the assistance of a therapist to identify triggers for anxiety, depression, and stress. Additionally, avoid multitasking; prioritize essential tasks to enhance focus and reduce the overall workload.
