SPAIN TOPS GLOBAL RANKINGS AS THE MOST DESIRABLE DESTINATION FOR DIGITAL NOMADS
Embracing the Nomadic Lifestyle: Spain's Allure for Remote Workers and Budget-Friendly Living
The allure of the digital nomad lifestyle continues to grow, with several countries now offering dedicated visas for these wanderers. In the early months of 2023, some nations initiated the provision of digital nomad visas, aiming to attract remote workers seeking a flexible and location-independent lifestyle. According to a study conducted by VisaGuide.World, Spain has emerged as the top-ranking country worldwide for digital nomads, surpassing nations that have been offering such visas for years.
The research covered 38 countries, taking into account factors such as visa availability, internet speed, tax policies, cost of living, Global Health Score, tourism popularity, and income requirements for visa applications.
Spain claimed the coveted first position, followed by Argentina in second place, Romania in third, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in fourth, and Croatia in fifth. The subsequent rankings included Portugal, Uruguay, Malta, Norway, and Andorra.
Spain: Budget-Friendly Digital Nomad Haven
The study revealed Spain as the most budget-friendly destination for digital nomads. Workers can comfortably live on a minimum wage of 641 euros or approximately Rp 10.8 million per month. However, during the visa application process, an individual must have at least 2,140 euros or around Rp 32 million per month.
Spain's popularity among digital nomads can be attributed to its status as a prime tourist destination in Europe. Argentina and Romania, ranking second and third, are not only favored for their tourist attractions but also for Argentina's tax-free policies and Romania's tax-free periods, coupled with high-speed internet.
Global Standouts: UAE and Croatia
The UAE ranks fourth due to the high-income opportunities in Dubai and the nation's tax-free policies. Meanwhile, Croatia stands out with a combination of an extended tax-free period, moderate living costs, and excellent internet speed.
Digital Nomads in Europe: Challenges and Opportunities
Several European countries impose high minimum income requirements. For instance, Iceland demands a minimum income of 7,000 euros or approximately Rp 118 million, coupled with a high cost of living at 1,181 euros or about Rp 19.9 million.
Cyprus requires workers to pay taxes ranging from 20 to 35 percent after a tax-free period of six months. The minimum income requirement is substantial at 3,500 euros or approximately Rp 59 million. However, it's worth noting that Cyprus has the lowest internet speed in Europe.
As the digital nomad trend continues to gain momentum, the competition among countries to attract these remote workers is likely to intensify, with factors like affordability, lifestyle, and internet infrastructure playing pivotal roles in determining their preferences.
