CELEBRATING 75 YEARS OF DIPLOMATIC FRIENDSHIP: BELGIUM AND INDONESIA’S SHARED JOURNEY
A Tribute to 75 Years of Strong Diplomatic Ties and Cultural Exchange Between Belgium and Indonesia
On November 14, 2024, at Ayana Midplaza Jakarta, a memorable event took place as Belgium marked its King’s Day with a celebration of friendship and cultural unity. Hosted by Ambassador Frank Felix and Çiğdem Bagcı Felix, the reception honored King Philippe of Belgium and reflected on the long-lasting diplomatic ties between Belgium and Indonesia. The day’s significance was amplified by the 75th anniversary of the two nations’ diplomatic relations, a relationship rooted in mutual respect and cooperation.
The evening's festivities brought together a wide array of influential guests, including prominent Indonesian figures such as former Vice President Jusuf Kalla, businessman Rosan Roeslani, and Saleh Husin. Set against the backdrop of the theme of cultural diversity, the event featured stirring choir performances and musical acts that highlighted the richness of both Belgian and Indonesian cultural traditions.
A particularly poignant moment of the celebration was Belgium’s tribute to Indonesia’s cultural wealth. In a symbolic gesture of friendship, the iconic Manneken Pis statue in Brussels was dressed in traditional Lampung attire, a nod to the diversity and vibrancy of Indonesia’s cultural heritage. This gesture not only commemorated 75 years of diplomacy but also celebrated the deep cultural exchanges between the two nations.
Satryo Soemantri Brodjonegoro, Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology, attending the celebration, underscored the importance of cultural diplomacy in strengthening bilateral ties. He recalled Indonesia’s prominent role as the guest country at the Europalia Arts Festival 2017-2018, where over 500 Indonesian artists showcased their artistic brilliance in Belgium and across Europe. “Cultural exchange lays the foundation for deeper diplomatic relations,” said Satryo, emphasizing the role such initiatives play in fostering greater understanding between nations.
Ambassador Frank Felix echoed this sentiment, reflecting on the remarkable history between Belgium and Indonesia. He highlighted Belgium's early recognition of Indonesia’s sovereignty in 1949, one of the first European nations to do so, and the establishment of diplomatic missions in both capitals. Felix also recalled key moments of the partnership, including high-profile visits like those of Presidents Joko Widodo and Suharto, which further strengthened the bond.
“Over the past 75 years, our relationship has flourished, transcending political changes and strengthening in multiple sectors,” Felix remarked. “Belgium values its partnership with Indonesia, and we look forward to enhancing collaboration across areas like trade, education, and social affairs with the new Indonesian administration.” Belgian entrepreneurs, experts, and cultural communities are eager to explore new opportunities to engage with Indonesia in the future.
The King’s Day reception was not just an occasion to celebrate the birthday of King Philippe of Belgium but also a moment to reflect on the shared history and vision for the future of the Belgium-Indonesia relationship. With continued cooperation in culture, economics, and people-to-people ties, the two nations are well-poised to build on their solid foundation and create new opportunities for growth and mutual understanding in the years to come.
