Art Jakarta 2024, Indonesia’s largest art fair, concluded with notable success at JIExpo Kemayoran, expanding by 20% and featuring a wider range of galleries, installations, and collaborations. Held from October 4 to 6, the fair welcomed 73 exhibitors from across the globe, showcasing a diverse range of works. Supported by corporate sponsorships from UOB Indonesia and Bibit-Stockbit, the event solidified its position as a key player in the Southeast Asian art market.

According to Art Jakarta's fair director Tom Tandio, the expansion was essential for growth. "This enhancement offers an experience at par with other global art events,” he stated during his opening speech. The larger venue allowed for a broader selection of exhibits, creating an immersive experience for visitors. This year’s attendance hit a record high of 38,368 visitors, surpassing last year’s numbers.

Showcasing Sociopolitical and Environmental Issues

Among the highlights of Art Jakarta 2024 was the curated Spot section, which featured powerful sociopolitical and environmental statements from Indonesian artists. Timoteus Anggawan Kusno’s “Dismantling Nostalgia” critiqued Dutch colonial propaganda, while Tisna Sanjaya’s “Ganjel” used satire to address nepotism in modern Indonesian politics. Environmental themes were also present, such as in Syaiful Garibaldi’s “Antara Muara,” a tribute to coastal mangroves, and Iwan Yusuf’s “Air Pasang,” a striking installation of fishing nets symbolizing ocean waste.

These commissioned works emphasized the wealth of creative talent in Indonesia, with Mr. Tandio noting the country’s growing influence in the regional art scene. “We strive to provide artists a platform to present their creations and showcase Indonesia’s growing importance in the international art world,” he said.

Collaboration and Growth in the Art Market

Collaboration was a key focus of this year’s event. In addition to featuring local talent, Art Jakarta partnered with galleries and art fairs from countries such as South Korea and Singapore. Notable collaborations included ROH Projects, which exhibited a variety of works from local artists like Eko Nugroho, and ShanghART Singapore’s minimalist installation by Robert Zhao.

With its larger scale, expanded programming, and rising visitor numbers, Art Jakarta 2024 not only reinforced its position as a leading art fair but also highlighted the growing potential of Southeast Asia’s art market. As Mr. Tandio remarked, "Art Jakarta is an Asian-focused art fair, and we continue to push collaborations to promote art across the region."

Art Jakarta’s continued growth and international partnerships reflect the dynamic future of the Indonesian art market, promising even greater achievements in the years to come.
