ARRIGO SACCHI: BRAZIL NOW UNDERSTANDS THE PAIN OF LOSING A PENALTY SHOOTOUT
The former coach for Italy at the 1994 World Cup recalled Italy's defeat by Brazil in the final through a penalty shootout.
Brazil's defeat in a penalty shootout against Croatia in the quarter-finals, which took place at the Education City Stadium, caught Arrigo Sacchi's attention.
The former coach for Italy at the 1994 World Cup recalled Italy's defeat by Brazil in the final through a penalty shootout.
At that time, the highlight of the event, which took place at the Rose Bowl Stadium, Pasadena, California, Brazil won after Franco Baresi, and Roberto Baggio's kicks bounced over the bar.
Sacchi, 76, said he empathized with Tite's team but emphasized that Croatia had the fighting spirit to win the game.
"Croatian players never give up and are not afraid to play ball against Brazilian players. They are more determined than Brazil. And now they understand how painful it is to lose on penalties," Sacchi wrote in La Gazzeta Dello Sport, Saturday, December 10, 2022.
Sacchi added that when he watched on TV when Brazil lost to Croatia, the former AC Milan coach immediately recalled the feelings and emotions in Pasadena in 1994.
Sacchi also shared his thoughts on Argentina's win over the Netherlands on penalties. He criticized the way the Albiceleste played after winning 2-0.
"I didn't see a lot of quality in the first half. Only when Lionel Messi had the ball, that's all. Nobody wanted to take the risk of breaking in. Louis van Gaal's side usually attack but the Netherlands were more defensive at this World Cup."
"When Argentina was 2-0 up, van Gaal put on a tall striker, the right move, but Argentina made an unforgivable mistake. They should not have allowed the Netherlands to get close to goal, and stayed on the halfway line," he concluded.
