ACTIVE COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT KEY TO PRESERVING INDONESIA'S CULTURAL HERITAGE, SAYS MINISTER OF CULTURE
Minister Fadli Zon Calls for Collective Effort to Safeguard and Promote Indonesia's Rich Cultural Heritage
Minister of Culture Fadli Zon emphasized that the active participation of all layers of society, from academicians and cultural practitioners to the younger generation, is crucial for the success of preserving Indonesia's rich cultural heritage. Speaking at the 2024 Indonesian Cultural Heritage Award (AWBI) ceremony, Zon highlighted that cultural heritage is not merely a relic of the past but a vital asset that forms the very identity of the nation.
"Cultural heritage is a national treasure that reflects the spirit of our nation. It is not just a historical legacy but an invaluable part of our identity," Zon stated in a press release received on Sunday.
The Minister pointed out that various forms of cultural heritage, including batik motifs, gamelan rhythms, traditional dances, and folklore, carry important values such as unity, cooperation, and respect for the country's diversity. He urged the community to take an active role in caring for and maintaining this cultural wealth, while also promoting it to the world.
This year, the Ministry of Culture recognized 272 new intangible cultural heritages and 17 cultural properties across Indonesia. The process of designation involved cultural experts, local governments, institutions, cultural maestros, as well as property owners, managers, and the wider community.
Minister Zon also noted that Indonesia currently has 2,213 intangible cultural heritages and 228 national cultural properties. The 2024 AWBI ceremony, he added, serves as a timely reminder of the importance of preserving national culture and the role it plays in building national pride.
"Through this event, we hope to foster greater awareness of the value of cultural heritage and to encourage sustainable management of our intangible cultural heritage," Zon remarked.
The Minister commended cultural experts, artists, and communities who continue to innovate in introducing cultural heritage through modern means such as digital media, film, performances, and international collaborations. These efforts, he said, help ensure that Indonesia's cultural heritage remains vibrant and relevant in the global era.
