American Band Weezer showed that they have their ears on the very pulse of Indonesian memes and culture during their show at Soundrenaline 2022 held in Ancol, Jakarta on Saturday, November 26, 2022.

You’ve probably seen clips of them recently making the rounds on social media singing “Anak Sekolah” (“School Kids”) a classic tune by the legendary Indonesian singer Chrisye. He sang the song entirely in Indonesian and his pronunciation was pretty darn good.

Right before the song, Weezer vocalist Rivers Cuomo quipped and joked around with the crowd saying “Aman bro?” which is the Indonesian shorthand for “everyone doing alright?” to “Kamu nanya?” (You’re asking me?”) from an Indonesian TikTok meme.

“The next song I’ll be singing is ‘Anak Sekolah’,” said Rivers in Bahasa Indonesia.

Rivers spoke in Bahasa Indonesia for almost the entire set and showed his chops.

Opening the show, Rivers also greeted the crowd with an “Assalamualaikum! Selamat malam bestie,” which, yes, “Assalamualaikum” is an Arabic greeting, but it’s very commonly used among Indonesians.

Shortly after, the band opened by playing “My Name Is Jonas,” one of their earliest hits.

The band, which consists of Rivers Cuomo (vocals and guitarist), Patrick Wilson (drums), Matt Sharp (bass), and Jason Cropper (guitar), also seems to have a special impression on its fans in Indonesia.

“Welcome to our concert, it’s gonna be fun. We love coming here, last time we came here was nine years ago. You like Weezer too, huh bro?” said Rivers Cuomo in Indonesian.

The band played all their hits including; "Beverly Hills", "Hash Pipe", "Pork & Beans", "Teenage Dirtbag", "Island in The Sun", and "Say It Ain't So".

Weezer also covered Toto's "Africa" and their latest single "What Happens After You".

“Thank you, everyone, Weezer loves Indonesia. Did you guys enjoy the show? We’re gonna peace out, bye besties, someone wants to go to Dufan,” said Rivers jokingly in Indonesian, and ended their set and the first day of Soundrenaline 2022 with “Buddy Holly.”
