The 2022 Academy Awards, which are just around the corner, are set to bring some surprises. With voting already closed, it's anyone's guess who will take home the coveted trophy.

The Academy Awards, also known as the Oscars, are Hollywood's most prestigious film awards. They were first presented in 1927 to honor the best in film editing, writing, and cinematography.

Its presenter, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, has over 10,000 members and 17 branches, and many of its branches are represented by various professionals such as directors, actors, and cinematographers. There are also various members at large.

Film studios submit nominees for the award each year. The nominees are selected by the Academy's members and announced on February 8.

This year, Disney receives many high-profile nominations for its films (as usual), from the gritty "Cruella" to the wholesome "Luca" and "Encanto". Here are five upcoming Oscar-nominated films by Disney you can watch on Disney Plus today.

Cruella
"Cruella" is a Disney film that showcased the story of a young girl named Estella, who became one of the franchise's most memorable villains. The movie received two Oscar nominations for Best Costume Design.

The film's stunning costumes made it eligible for various categories, including Best Makeup and Hairstyling.

"Encanto" has only been out for a few months, but it has already taken the world by storm. The song "We Don't Talk About Bruno" has made it to the top of the music charts.

"Encanto" received three Oscar nominations, including Best Original Score for its composer, Germaine Franco. The other two are for its song "Dos Oruguitas," under the Best Original Song category, and Best Animated Feature.

Luca
The film is a coming-of-age story about a boy who enjoys the beach and all the fun that comes with it. When he learns that he is a sea monster, he must share his secret with his best friend and have a wonderful adventure.

While Pixar movies are usually considered shoo-ins for the Best Animated Feature nomination, the film's nomination is extra special due to its director, Enrico Casarosa.

Raya and the Last Dragon
The film follows Raya, a warrior princess tasked with saving her homeworld from a terrifying plague. She must travel across the kingdoms of Kumandra and evade the menacing presence of her nemesis, Namaari. The story of "Raya and the Last Dragon" is inspired by Southeast Asian cultures. The titular dragon is modeled after a race found in Buddhism, Hinduism, and Jainism.

The filmmaker behind the feature is a veteran of Disney. Director Don Hall had won the Animated Feature Oscar for his work on Big Hero 6. Now, "Raya and the Last Dragon" is nominated for the Best Animated Feature.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings
Disney's Marvel Cinematic Universe is worth hundreds of millions of dollars annually. The company's films are known for their quality, and this year, Shang-Chi was nominated for Best Visual Effects.

Other than Shang-Chi, another MCU movie was nominated for the Best Visual Effects, Spider-Man: No Way Home.
