Indonesia Fashion Week 2026 didn't open with a generic runway moment. It opened with a hand-woven cloth from North Sumatra being reframed as a symbol of balance and a blueprint for how local craft can hold its own in a global market.
Indonesia Fashion Week (IFW) 2026 is the 14th edition of the country's flagship fashion event, officially opened on July 29, 2026 at the Jakarta Convention Center in Senayan, Jakarta. Presented by BTN, this year's theme, "Ulos Simetria," puts North Sumatra forward as the Official Theme province, using the Batak region's traditional Ulos cloth as the central design language. Hundreds of designers, brand owners, fashion houses, artisans, and small business owners are taking part across five days of runway shows, trade exhibitions, creative forums, talks, and a food festival running through August 3.
Poppy Dharsono, President of Indonesia Fashion Week and Chairperson of the Indonesian Fashion Designers and Entrepreneurs Association (APPMI), framed the theme as more than a design choice.
"Through the theme Ulos Simetria, we want to affirm that Indonesia's fashion industry must keep balancing tradition and innovation between local wisdom and global competition, and between cultural values and the future of the creative industry."
That balancing act showed up literally on stage. Designs translated Ulos weaving patterns into contemporary silhouettes without stripping out the philosophy behind them heritage that moves with trend cycles instead of sitting behind glass.

What Makes This Year's IFW Different?
Unlike past editions that leaned mostly on showcasing talent, IFW 2026 is positioning itself as an economic engine. Rully Setiawan, Director of Network & Retail Funding at BTN, said the event now drives transactions, investment, tourism, and market access not just applause.
Here's the surprising part: this isn't just a Jakarta story. Kahiyang Ayu Bobby Nasution, Chair of the North Sumatra Regional Handicraft Council (Dekranasda), wants Ulos to become a Gen Z export not only in fashion but in tourism too, pulling younger buyers toward a textile most of them have only seen at weddings.
How Is the Government Supporting This?
Deputy Minister of Trade Dyah Roro Esti Widya Putri pointed to Indonesia's wastra (traditional textile) heritage as the industry's core competitive asset. The Ministry of Trade is actively pushing export expansion through Trade Attachés and Indonesia Trade Promotion Centers (ITPC) operating in 32 countries meaning a runway look in Jakarta this week could realistically end up on a rack in a market Indonesia already has trade infrastructure in.
Why This Matters Beyond the Runway
Fashion weeks live and die on FOMO, but IFW 2026's real pitch is structural: turning a five-day event into a pipeline connecting artisans, designers, exporters, and government trade channels. If it works, Ulos stops being "that fabric from Sumatra" and becomes a genuine export category.
