APPLE INTRODUCES CHATGPT-POWERED SIRI: WHAT IT MEANS FOR YOUR IPHONE AND PRIVACY
Apple's New AI Features: Enhanced Siri, Privacy Measures, and What Users Need to Know
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is set to make a significant leap on iPhones with Apple's upcoming iOS 18 update, featuring a ChatGPT-enhanced version of its voice assistant, Siri. This new AI suite, branded as "Apple Intelligence," promises to transform how users interact with their devices, but it also raises questions about data privacy.
What Is Apple Intelligence and When Can You Use It?
Apple Intelligence encompasses a range of AI capabilities integrated into iOS 18. Set to launch alongside the new iPhone 16 models in September, the initial rollout of AI features will follow with the iOS 18.1 update expected in late October. The update will introduce advanced writing tools, suggested replies in Messages, email summarisation, and phone call transcription. Future additions include the Image Playground for animated images and Genmoji, a new form of custom emoji.
How Will iPhone Usage Change?
Users can expect a more personalized and efficient experience. The new features include improved contextual replies from Siri, the ability to view your calendar, photos, and messages to provide more accurate responses, and the option to record and transcribe phone calls with consent. However, as with any new technology, initial glitches are possible. Apple CEO Tim Cook acknowledges that while he is confident in the AI's quality, it may not be flawless.
ChatGPT Integration: A Key Difference
Unlike using the standalone ChatGPT app, Apple's Siri will use ChatGPT to handle more complex requests that Siri itself cannot manage. When Siri encounters such requests, it will pass them to ChatGPT, but with an added layer of privacy protection. According to Camden Woollven, group head of AI at GRC International Group, Siri anonymizes and encrypts data before sending it to OpenAI, unlike direct use of ChatGPT where data goes straight to OpenAI's servers.
Privacy Considerations
Apple emphasizes that privacy is a core part of Apple Intelligence. Most processing will occur on the user's device, minimizing data sent to external servers. Data is anonymized and encrypted if it needs to be processed in the cloud. Apple will also provide users with an "Apple Intelligence Report," detailing how requests were handled.
Nevertheless, AI’s demand for data means Apple will have access to extensive personal information, including messages, calendar events, and photos. Users who are concerned about this can choose to opt out by toggling off Apple Intelligence in the device settings.
As Apple gears up to integrate AI into its ecosystem, the combination of enhanced functionalities and privacy measures offers a new dimension to the iPhone experience. Users will have to weigh the benefits of a more intelligent and responsive Siri against their privacy concerns, with the option to control their participation in these new features.
