On August 8, 2026, in a concert hall in Helsingborg, Sweden, 28 children and teenagers from Klaten, Central Java, stood in traditional Balinese dress, fans in hand, and sang two folk songs  Janger and Dara Lumau well enough to be named Champion of the World Choir Games 2026 in the Folklore with Accompaniment category. It was the first time in 14 years the group, Vocalista Angels, had returned to the competition. They didn't come back empty-handed.

What is the World Choir Games, and who is Vocalista Angels?

The World Choir Games, sometimes called the "Olympics of choir singing," is a biennial international competition where choirs compete across categories judged on technical and artistic merit. Vocalista Angels is a children's and youth choir founded in 1997 in Klaten, Central Java, by C.A. Tersierra Rosa, known to the group as Tante Thea. At the 2026 edition, held August 6–10 in Helsingborg, Sweden, Vocalista Angels competed in two categories  Children's Choir and Folklore with Accompaniment  as part of the Champions Competition, a bracket reserved for choirs with prior international titles. They walked away with a Gold Medal and a Champion title in back-to-back days.

Why did a gold medal only mean 4th place?
Here's the detail most reports gloss over: in the Children's Choir category, Vocalista Angels scored 88.88 points and won Gold Medal  but placed fourth overall. That's not a contradiction. World Choir Games medals are awarded by score threshold, not by ranking against other choirs, so multiple groups can win gold in the same category even while placing differently on the leaderboard. For the Children's Choir round, the group performed four songs: Cikala Le Pong Pong, The Waters Dance of Lluvia, A Puppet's Dream, and Yamko Rambe Yamko  the last one a well-known folk melody from Papua.

How did they prepare, and who was in the group?
According to Thea, the delegation trained for seven months, with singers selected through tryouts from a pool of roughly 70 active Vocalista Angels members. Almost all of the 2026 traveling group were first-timers at the World Choir Games  their only prior international stage experience came from the Sarawak International Choral Festival in Malaysia in late 2025, where they won Youth Choir and Folklore titles that qualified them for Helsingborg.

The choir left Klaten on August 4, 2026, after a send-off event at Pendopo Kabupaten Klaten attended by local officials, families, and alumni. After Helsingborg, the delegation traveled to Copenhagen for a reception hosted by the Indonesian Embassy on August 11, before flying home to Jakarta on August 13.

Why does this matter beyond one choir's scoreboard?
Klaten isn't Jakarta or Bandung it's a regency of roughly 1.2 million people between Yogyakarta and Solo, not usually on the map for international arts coverage. A youth choir from there beating out choirs from over 100 countries, using regional Indonesian folk repertoire rather than Western classical standards, is a reminder that Indonesia's cultural exports don't only travel through the capital.
