With its stunning natural beauty and rich culture, Indonesia continues to be a major attraction for both international (wisman) and domestic (wisnus) tourists. Every year, Indonesia's tourism sector successfully draws millions of visitors from both within the country and abroad, with the sector showing continuous positive development.

Increase in International Tourist Arrivals

According to the latest data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), Indonesia's tourism sector is showing promising figures. In September 2024, the number of international tourists visiting Indonesia reached 1.28 million. Although this marks a decrease of 4.53 percent compared to August 2024, it still represents a 19.53 percent increase compared to September 2023.

"The number of international tourists visiting Indonesia in September 2024 was dominated by visitors from Malaysia, Australia, and China," said Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti, Acting Head of BPS, in a statement on Friday (1/11/2024). The data shows that Malaysia accounted for 18.33 percent, Australia 12.45 percent, and China 8.93 percent of the total international tourist arrivals in the month.

Growing Enthusiasm Among Domestic Tourists

Not only are international tourists showing interest, but domestic tourists are also becoming more enthusiastic about exploring Indonesia's natural beauty. In September 2024, the number of domestic tourist trips reached 83.36 million, an increase of 9.86 percent compared to August 2024. Year-on-year, this represents a significant 38.58 percent increase compared to September 2023.

"Compared to September 2023, the number of domestic tourist trips showed a substantial increase," said Amalia. From January to September 2024, the total number of domestic tourist trips reached 757.96 million, a 21.06 percent increase compared to the same period last year.

Rising Number of Domestic Tourists Traveling Abroad

Domestic tourists traveling abroad are also showing positive trends. In September 2024, the number of outbound trips by domestic tourists reached 660,890, a 1.97 percent increase compared to August 2024 and a 17.83 percent increase compared to September 2023. The top destinations for domestic travelers during this period included Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, and China.

Positive Impact on the Tourism Sector

The increase in tourist arrivals, both domestic and international, has had a significant positive impact on Indonesia's tourism sector. In addition to boosting national revenue, tourism also creates job opportunities and fosters new businesses, benefiting local communities.

With the continued upward trend, Indonesia is on the right track to solidify its position as a premier tourism destination, attracting both foreign and domestic tourists. The hope is that Indonesia’s tourism sector will continue to develop and make a significant contribution to the country's economic growth, while also fostering greater appreciation for the country's natural and cultural heritage.

Destinations Gaining International Recognition

In addition, several tourist destinations in Indonesia are gaining international recognition. One such destination is Raja Ampat, which was named among the best destinations in the world for 2025 by National Geographic. Other destinations, such as Moyo Island and Ponot Asahan Waterfall, the tallest waterfall in Indonesia, are also becoming more well-known for their extraordinary natural beauty.

With all its charm, Indonesia is poised to maintain and expand its appeal worldwide, ensuring that tourism remains a key sector supporting national economic development.
