Sad news came from the British Empire. Queen Elizabeth II died on Thursday, September 8, 2022. The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral Castle, her estate in the Scottish Highlands.

A report from BBC News, in the last few days Queen Elizabeth's health condition has declined. The monarch has been on a summer break at her Scottish home since July. Buckingham Palace said that the Queen is under medical supervision at Balmoral after doctors became concerned for her health.

Queen Elizabeth ruled the British Empire for 70 years. Now his son, King Charles III, will inherit the throne and become Queen Elizabeth's successor. 

King Charles said the death of his beloved mother was a "moment of great sadness" for him and his family and that her loss would be "deeply felt" around the world.

"We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished sovereign and a much-loved mother," said King Charles III.

"I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the realms and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world."

During the coming period of mourning, he said he and his family would be "comforted and sustained by our knowledge of the respect and deep affection in which the Queen was so widely held".

The Royal Family has now entered a period of mourning. In the coming days, much of national life will be put on hold. A state funeral for the Queen is expected in the next two weeks.
