In a historic triumph, music legend Elton John has officially joined the prestigious EGOT club by securing all four major entertainment awards—an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony. The 76-year-old icon clinched the final accolade with an Emmy Award for his concert film, Elton John Live: Farewell From Dodger Stadium, which dominated the Outstanding Variety Special category at last night's ceremony.

Presented by comedians Amy Poehler and Tina Fey, the duo brought humor to the moment, with Poehler stating, "Now, I can’t speak for Elton, but EGOT to be excited about that." Unfortunately, the iconic artist could not attend the ceremony due to a recent knee replacement surgery. David Furnish, Elton John's husband, humorously remarked, "which isn’t surprising if you think of the number of pianos he’s jumped off from in platform heels," in a video shared by the Hollywood Reporter.

Furnish revealed that he woke up John in the middle of the night via Facetime to share the news of his achievement. "He screamed out loud," Furnish said with a smile.

Elton John had previously won five Grammy Awards, two Oscars for his contributions to The Lion King’s "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" and Rocketman’s "(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again," and a Tony for the score to the musical Aida. Expressing his gratitude, John stated, "I am incredibly humbled to be joining the unbelievably talented group of EGOT winners tonight. The journey to this moment has been filled with passion, dedication, and the unwavering support of my fans all around the world."

The term "EGOT" was coined about four decades ago by "Miami Vice" actor Philip Michael Thomas. At the time, only three individuals—composer Richard Rodgers, actress Helen Hayes, and actress Rita Moreno—had achieved this rare distinction. Although Thomas did not achieve his EGOT goals, the term gained popularity over the years.

Elton John now joins the esteemed ranks of decorated performers such as Mel Brooks, Alan Menken, Whoopi Goldberg, and John Legend. He becomes the 19th entertainer to achieve EGOT status, following in the footsteps of Viola Davis, who attained the title with a Grammy award last year.

Ben Winston, a producer of Farewell From Dodger Stadium, accepted the Emmy on behalf of Elton John. In his speech, Winston reflected on the historic nature of the show, not only as Elton's farewell concert in North America but also as Disney's first-ever live global stream. "We didn’t know that it was going to win him an EGOT," he added, acknowledging the unexpected but momentous achievement.
