On September 18, 2026, the Global Michelin Guide handed out its 2026 Key list, and Indonesia walked away with 47 properties recognized up from 33 just a year earlier. That's a 42% jump in twelve months, and it now puts Indonesia at the second-highest count in Southeast Asia, right behind Thailand.

What is the Michelin Key, exactly?
The Michelin Key is the hotel-world equivalent of a Michelin Star. Instead of rating food, Michelin's inspectors who stay anonymously and pay their own way rate the entire stay: design, architecture, service consistency, character, and how well a property connects guests to its actual location rather than a generic luxury template. Keys launched globally in 2024, arrived in Indonesia for the first time in 2025 with 33 hotels, and this year's list is round two.
Who got Three Michelin Keys in Indonesia?
Three properties reached the top category this year. NIHI Sumba in East Nusa Tenggara, known for its horseback rides along empty coastline and a spa built into a private jungle valley, took one spot. Amanjiwo in Magelang, Central Java the resort that stares straight at Borobudur from its hilltop rotunda took another. The third went to Mandapa, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve in Ubud, Bali, where the sound of the Ayung River running past your private pool villa is basically the amenity.
Why does Bali dominate the list?
Of the 47 total properties, 30 are in Bali. That's not an accident of geography it reflects two decades of the island building a specific kind of luxury hospitality: architect-driven design, farm-to-table dining tied to actual local farms, and staff-to-guest ratios that make personalized service the norm rather than the upsell. Eleven properties nationwide landed the Two-Key "Exceptional Stay" tier, including Amankila, Soori Bali, Bvlgari Resort Bali, and The Langham, Jakarta proof the recognition isn't purely a Bali story, even if Bali carries the weight.
"Let us optimize the momentum to strengthen Indonesia's position as an advanced, competitive, and sustainable world-class tourism destination," said Indonesia's Minister of Tourism, Widiyanti Putri Wardhana, responding to the announcement.
How much does it cost to stay at a Michelin Key hotel in Indonesia?
Prices vary widely by tier and island. One-Key properties like The Ridge Bali or boutique stays in Yogyakarta can start around IDR 3–5 million per night, while Three-Key properties like NIHI Sumba or Mandapa often start north of IDR 15–20 million per night in peak season, since these are limited-inventory, full-immersion resorts rather than standard hotel rooms.
Here's the surprising part: Indonesia added 14 new properties to the list in a single year nearly matching the entire inaugural class. Globally, the 2026 selection recognized 2,832 hotels across more than 100 countries, meaning Indonesia's 47 represents a real share of a genuinely competitive field, not a regional courtesy nod.
