FLORA CHRISTIN REDEFINES SURFING: RIDING BALI’S WAVES IN A KEBAYA
Merging Tradition with Extreme Sports, Indonesia’s First Female Longboarder Makes a Bold Statement
Bali’s waves have seen countless skilled surfers, but none quite like Flora Christin. The pioneering longboarder recently turned heads worldwide by surfing in a kebaya—a bold move that blends Indonesian heritage with the adrenaline rush of extreme sports.
Flora’s unique stunt was more than just a visual spectacle. It was a powerful statement: Indonesian women can excel in sports without abandoning their cultural identity. By swapping traditional surfwear for the elegant kebaya, she challenged norms, proving that movement, performance, and heritage can coexist beautifully on the same board.
From Office Cubicle to Champion Longboarder
Born in North Sumatra, Flora grew up dreaming of the ocean. In 2014, she left behind a corporate job in Jakarta, embarking on a journey of self-discovery. Two years later, she settled in Canggu, Bali, where she fully immersed herself in the world of surfing.
Her dedication soon translated into global recognition. Flora’s achievements include:
- Gold Medalist – Khao Lak Surf Festival 2023 (Women's Longboard)
- Bronze Medalist – National Sports Festival, Aceh 2024
- 3rd Place – RAST La Union 2017
- 2nd Place – Canggu Surf Fest 2021 (Open Catch Surf)
Beyond competition, she has dedicated herself to inspiring a new generation of female surfers in Indonesia, proving that longboarding isn’t just a male-dominated sport.
Inspiring Women to Chase Their Dreams
Flora’s mission extends far beyond the waves. She volunteers as a surf coach for children in Batu Karas, ensuring that young girls have the opportunity to enter the sport. She has also led humanitarian efforts, including building 200 homes for Lombok earthquake victims in 2018.
Her message to women is clear: take the leap. “If you find something you love, just do it,” Flora says. “When you live with passion, you’re not just existing—you’re truly living.”
From the boardroom to the surfboard, Flora Christin’s story is a testament to fearless ambition. She isn’t just riding waves—she’s making them, inspiring women to break boundaries and redefine what’s possible.
