Voice of Baceprot (VoB), an Indonesian all-female metal band, continues to break stereotypes and challenge global norms by harmonizing heavy metal with cultural and religious identity.

Firda Marsya Kurnia, the lead vocalist of VoB, recently earned a place on the BBC’s 100 Most Influential Women of 2024. Recognized for her unyielding passion for music despite societal stereotypes about Muslim women wearing hijabs, Firda has become a symbol of resilience and empowerment.

From a Small Town to the World Stage
Hailing from Garut, West Java, VoB—short for "Voice of Baceprot" (Baceprot means "noisy" in Sundanese)—began in 2014 as a school extracurricular activity. Comprising Firda Marsya Kurnia (vocals), Euis Siti Aisyah (drums), and Widi Rahmawati (bass), the band quickly transitioned from local performances to gaining international recognition.

Their breakthrough moment came when they performed at the iconic Glastonbury Festival 2024, marking the first time an Indonesian band graced this globally renowned stage. Sharing the lineup with international stars such as Dua Lipa, Coldplay, and Avril Lavigne, VoB made waves by blending metal music with their unique cultural expression.

Challenging Stereotypes Through Music
VoB’s journey is more than just about music; it’s a bold statement against preconceived notions about women, particularly those wearing hijabs, in the global metal scene. Their performances have become a platform to challenge Islamophobia and redefine the narrative around Muslim women.

“Metal is our medium to express freedom, empowerment, and individuality,” says Firda. “It’s about being heard, no matter where you come from or what you believe.”

Their presence has sparked conversations in Europe, particularly within metal communities often unaccustomed to seeing women in hijabs. By standing tall in spaces traditionally dominated by men, VoB is proving that identity and artistry can coexist without compromise.

A Rising Force in the Global Metal Scene
VoB’s success extends beyond Glastonbury. They’ve performed at major European festivals, including Colours of Ostrava (Czech Republic) and Wacken Open Air (Germany), captivating audiences in countries like the Netherlands and Denmark. Each performance showcases their signature mix of heavy riffs and empowering lyrics, resonating with fans worldwide.

Inspiring a New Generation
VoB’s journey has inspired not just musicians but also women and young people across the globe. Their ability to stay true to their roots while making an impact on the global stage is a testament to the power of perseverance and authenticity.

As they continue to tour and release music, VoB is shaping a new narrative for women in metal and paving the way for others to follow. Their story is a powerful reminder that music transcends borders, identities, and stereotypes.
