Every Indonesian kid knows the rule: come home before maghrib, or something might follow you. It turns out kids in Kyrgyzstan grew up hearing the same warning.
That shared fear is the base of The Land of Jinn, the next film from director Kevin Rahardjo. It is also the first horror film that Indonesia and Kyrgyzstan are making together.
The Land of Jinn film is a horror movie directed by Kevin Rahardjo, the filmmaker behind Legenda Kelam Malin Kundang (Smothered). It is a co-production between Indonesia and Kyrgyzstan, planned for release in 2027. The project was introduced at the Tokyo Gap-Financing Market, part of the Tokyo International Film Festival. The budget has not been made public.
What is The Land of Jinn About?
The story follows a young Indonesian woman who is pregnant. She travels to Kyrgyzstan to find a mystical healer, because she believes this person can save the baby she is carrying.
Her trip goes wrong in a quiet way. Without knowing it, she ties her child’s fate to the jinn who live in that land.
The film’s poster shows what that world might feel like: dark mountains, thick mist, and a cold blue light. It looks like a place where a phone signal drops and the evening goes silent.

Who is making The Land of Jinn?
Kevin Rahardjo directs. The script was written by Makbul Mubarak and Tumpal Tampubolon.
On the Indonesian side, the producers are Yulia Evina Bhara, Amerta Kusuma, and Nazira C. Noer. From Kyrgyzstan, the producers are Sultan Pirzhan and Elvira Sarieva of FreeMinds, along with Maksat Bolotbek of Bairak Group.
This is Rahardjo’s next step after Smothered, which was based on the Malin Kundang folk legend. Both films take old stories that people already know and turn them into horror.
Why would two countries make a horror film together?
Because the fear is the same, even though the countries are far apart.
According to Variety, Rahardjo wanted to tell this story because it let him turn a very human wish into horror. That wish is to live a life that society sees as “complete.”
Producer Yulia Evina Bhara added a detail that surprised many readers: children in both countries grow up hearing their grandparents say not to leave the house after maghrib. Two countries, thousands of kilometers apart, one bedtime warning.
“Children in both countries grow up with the same grandparent warning: don’t go outside after maghrib.” Yulia Evina Bhara, producer (as reported by Variety)
Bhara also hopes the film can become a model for Asian countries making movies together.
What happens next for The Land of Jinn?
For now, the film is still looking for money. The Tokyo Gap-Financing Market is where filmmakers meet investors to fund the last part of a budget, so the film has not finished raising funds.
The team is aiming for a 2027 release. No cast, filming dates, or release date have been shared yet. Expect more news as financing and casting come together.
