The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued a weather forecast for today, January 29, warning residents across various regions to prepare for heavy rainfall of up to 50 millimeters per day accompanied by thunders and strong winds.

According to the agency's Deputy for Meteorology, the affected areas encompass all provinces in Sumatra, Java, and Sulawesi. The forecast attributes the prevailing weather conditions to a cyclonic circulation observed in the Pacific Ocean north of West Papua and the Indian Ocean southwest of Java. This atmospheric phenomenon has led to areas of convergence, resulting in the intensified growth of rain clouds in the affected regions.

The BMKG emphasized that, despite the adverse weather conditions, there are currently no active tropical cyclone seeds under its monitoring.

In a separate statement, Eddy Hermawan, the lead expert researcher at the Climate and Atmospheric Research Center of the National Innovation Research Agency (BRIN), shed light on the factors influencing the current rain patterns in Indonesia. Hermawan highlighted that the precipitation is influenced by the mass of water vapor from Siberia, the El Nino phenomenon, and the apparent position of the sun's movement.

Elaborating on the El Nino impact, Eddy Hermawan noted that it is still progressing toward its peak in January 2024. However, he highlighted an interesting contrast, mentioning that the peak of the rainy season has already occurred in December 2023.

As residents brace themselves for the challenging weather conditions, authorities advise taking necessary precautions and staying informed about any updates or warnings issued by relevant meteorological agencies. It is crucial for the public to stay vigilant and follow safety guidelines to minimize the potential impact of the heavy rainfall, thunders, and strong winds expected across multiple regions of Indonesia today.
